MVP Krebs powers Sea Gulls to back-to-back SU Invitational championships

SALISBURY, Md. - For the second straight weekend the Salisbury University volleyball team are champions of their own invitational as the Sea Gulls went a perfect 4-0 over the two-day tournament. Salisbury junior Stacey Krebs won the MVP award for the second straight week as she ended the four matches with 64 kills, 37 digs, two blocks and eight block assists.

The Gulls (18-5) have now won 11 straight matches, 18 straight sets, and remain undefeated at home with a 9-0 mark at the Maggs Center. SU defeated Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet University 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-23) in a non-conference affair on Saturday. The Gulls followed with their sixth straight 3-0 victory as they beat SUNY New Paltz 30-28, 30-18, 30-25.

Krebs finished the two matches with 37 kills (16 vs. Gallaudet and 21 vs. SNP), 20 digs (nine vs. Gallaudet and 11 vs. SNP) and had five block assists against the Bison. Krebs and teammate Jaime Marzocchi were named to the All-Tournament team along with one member from the other four teams in the tournament.

Marzocchi had 26 assists against Gallaudet and 38 against SUNY New Paltz. She finished the tournament with 146 assists and 26 digs in four matches.

In the final match of the tournament SU struggled briefly against SUNY New Paltz. The maroon and gold trailed in all three sets against the Hawks. In the first set, SU trailed 21-25 when they received a needed spark from Melissa Stansbury. The freshman served up four straight points and knotted the set at 25 apiece. SU went on the win the set 30-28.

Junior Gabby Long chipped in 25 digs on Saturday in the two matches. Sophomores Rachel Downes and Nicole Massarelli each recorded 13 kills each and Stansbury added 16 digs.   

Salisbury will take its winning streak on the road on Tuesday, October 2, when the Sea Gulls face new CAC member Villa Julie College.
