WESTMINSTER, Md. - The winning streak now sits
at 27 straight as the No. 24 Salisbury University volleyball team
completed the sweep at the Green Terror Invitational on Saturday
with two straight set wins over host McDaniel College and Gallaudet
University. The shutouts were the Sea Gulls 21st and 22nd of the
season, respectively, as Salisbury has won 37 of the past 39 sets.
Salisbury (27-1) notched its fifth tournament win of the season
in six attempts. The Sea Gulls won the Battlefield Classic hosted
by Gettysburg College, the Garnett Classic hosted by Swarthmore
College, the Sea Gull Classic, the Salisbury Invitational and the
Green Terror Invitational. SU will have one more chance to win
a tournament, the Seahawk Tournament hosted by St. Mary's (Md.)
College, in two weeks. The only tournament loss this season came in
the Juniata Tournament, at the start of the season, at the
hands of host No. 1 Juniata College.
Carroll County natives senior Stacey Krebs and
sophomore Melissa Stansbury, both played
exceptionally well in front of a familiar crowd to lead the Sea
Gulls past the host Green Terror in straight sets, 25-19, 25-9,
25-17, in the first match of the afternoon. Krebs, the lone
all-tournament team selection for the champion Sea
Gulls, led the way offensively with a team-high 11 kills and
nine digs. On the defensive side of the ball, Stansbury recorded
eight digs and a career-high four service aces. Juniors
Rachel Downes (10 kills, nine digs) and
Gabby Long (13 digs) helped to negate the McDaniel
attacks. Senior Jaime Marzocchi recorded 23
assists in the win.
The Sea Gulls squared off with conference opponent Gallaudet
University, immediately following the first match, in a
non-conference match and took care of business as they defeated the
Bison in straight sets, 25-19, 25-11, 25-15. Downes turned in an
outstanding performance with 11 kills, nine digs and two service
aces. Stansbury carried over her strong play from the first match
to record a team-high 16 digs. Junior middle hitter Nicole
Massarelli found a hole in the Bison defense seven times
while Krebs added six kills. Sophomore Alexandria
Malesick also got into the act upfront with three solo
blocks. The ever reliable Marzocchi notched 26 assists and Long had
12 digs.
The maroon and gold will host conference opponent York (Pa.)
College on Wednesday, October 15, in the Maggs Center at 7 p.m. The
evening contest will mark "Senior Night" as the Sea Gulls play
their final regular-season home match of the season. The Sea Gulls
will end the season with a five-match road trip that concludes with
