SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 22 Salisbury
University volleyball team claimed its 28th consecutive victory on
Wednesday night in the final home regular-season game for SU's
senior class. Salisbury (28-1, 6-0 CAC) swept Capital Athletic
Conference foe York (Pa.) College in straight sets on "Senior
Night" with a 25-10, 25-7, 25-21 victory in front of a Maggs Center
crowd of over 500 people.
Salisbury's senior class is Stacey Krebs,
Sabrina Larmer, Jaime Marzocchi
and Stephanie Withers.
Krebs, the all-time Sea Gull leading scorer, led the way for the
SU offense with 14 kills and two blocks while Marzocchi
recorded 24 assists in the match. A trio of juniors also shined on
"Senior Night" as Rachel Downes (nine kills),
Nicole Massarelli (eight kills, two blocks) and
Gabby Long (26 digs) contributed in the 23rd
shutout this season for the Sea Gulls.
In the second set of the match, sophomore Melissa
Stansbury and the Sea Gulls went on an impressive run as
they recorded 18 straight points. The score jumped from a 4-4 tie
to 22-4 in favor of the Sea Gulls.
York (13-10, 3-4 CAC) was led by a trio of Spartans on offense
as Heather Butcher, Alishia Waltermeyer and Sierra Dell each
recorded five kills in the match. Cortni Rentzel provided 19
assists to her teammates and came up with 16 digs for the Spartans.
The potent Sea Gull offense proved too tough for York to handle.
The Sea Gull seniors have led SU to four consecutive CAC
tournament semifinal games and last season won the conference title
and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in three
seasons.
Salisbury will be off for a week before it will take the
nation's best winning streak to St. Mary's City, Md., on Friday,
October 24, to face the Seahawks in a key conference game and then
stick around for the rest of the weekend to participate in the
Seahawk Tournament.
