No. 23 Salisbury anchors Frostburg State, 55-14, in 10th Annual Regents Cup

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 23 Salisbury University football team claimed its fifth straight victory over in-state and Atlantic Central Football Conference rival Frostburg State University with a 55-14 rout Saturday evening in the 10th Annual Regents Cup. The nation's leading rushing team rolled up 441 yards in the win before 2,080 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

The win secures second place in the ACFC for the Sea Gulls (8-2, 2-1 ACFC) who have posted seven consecutive winning seasons under the guidance of SU coach Sherman Wood.

Senior quarterback Ronnie Curley ran for 99 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns plus he added one 36-yard touchdown pass en route to being selected as the Mike McGlinchey Most Outstanding Player for the Sea Gulls. Curley scored the game's first touchdown with 3:49 left in the first quarter on a 6-yard run. On the next Sea Gull possession, Curley hit junior wide receiver D.J. Nelson with a perfect pass for the touchdown just five seconds into the start of the second quarter.

Freshman kicker Tommy Kowalick (seven extra-points) connected on back-to-back field goal attempts for the Sea Gulls in the second quarter from 25 and 30 yards out. His final kick sent the maroon and gold into the half leading 20-0.

The Sea Gull offense continued to hum along in the second half as the Sea Gulls scored touchdowns on all five possessions. Sophomore slot Warren Anderson (12 carries, 114 yards) got things going with a 3-yard run just over four minutes into the third quarter.

The two teams traded touchdowns on the next four series. Frostburg State (3-6, 1-2 ACFC) got on the scoreboard when freshman quarterback Josh Volpe (9-for-12, 156 yards) was inserted into the second half and sparked the Bobcat offense. Volpe found Derek Sheely on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 6:40 left in the quarter. SU answered with a Curley touchdown run of 37 yards on a three play, 47 yard drive that took a minute and six seconds. Volpe scored the final touchdown for the Bobcats on a 1-yard keeper as FSU cut the lead to 20, 34-14, heading into the fourth quarter.

SU outscored Frostburg 21-0 in the final quarter as junior slot William Midgette (51 yards) scored two rushing touchdowns and senior dawg Matthew Bookard returned an interception for his third touchdown this season. Bookard (four tackles) made the pick at the Frostburg State 39-yard line and dashed down the left hand side of the field into the end zone with just under 12 minutes to play.

The Sea Gull defense held the Bobcats to 89 yards rushing and 176 yards passing for a total of 265 yards. Sophomore defensive lineman Chris Ross made a season-high eight tackles for the Sea Gulls. Sophomore linebacker Justin Chura (five tackles) picked off Volpe in the end zone on the second to last series for the Bobcats. There were no sacks recorded by either team. Frostburg State freshman free safety Jim Lohr made 13 tackles in the loss. Bobcat wide receiver Makiha Cooper (207 all-purpose yards) was the Frostburg State recipient of the Mike McGlinchey Most Outstanding Player.

Salisbury holds the series lead over Frostburg State 20-16 and has won six of the last 10 since the rivalry game was named the Regents Cup game. Salisbury's 55 points is the highest output by either team in the history of the series.

The Sea Gulls will next learn of their postseason fate on Sunday, November 16, when the official NCAA Division III playoff field is announced at 3 p.m. on ESPNU and http://www.ncaa.com/. If the Sea Gulls do not receive a Pool B or C bid they will await the official Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III bowl pairings.
