Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - The final day of the 2008
Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament proved to be a nail biter as
three of the four men's basketball games were determined by four
points or less. In the third-place game, Salisbury University was
edged by Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College 69-66 at
Stevenson University.
The lead changed hands six different times in the second
half as the Shoremen (2-2) took their final lead with seven
minutes left in the game. Salisbury (1-5) cut Washington's lead to
one, 67-66, on a three-pointer by junior Devin
Jones (eight points, five rebounds, four assists) with
1:32 left in the game. After a SU timeout, the Shoremen
answered with a jumper made by Andrew Chambers (12 points, six
rebounds) with a minute left. SU got off two final shots in the
waning seconds, including a three-pointer with three seconds left
in the game, but neither shot found the bottom of the net.
Junior Greg Palmer led all Sea Gulls with 11
points and four rebounds. Fellow junior Preston
Faulk contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two
assists. Forward Matt DeLizio (six points) led the
team with seven rebounds and three steals. Jones was named to the
all-tournament team.
SU jumped out to an early 11-4 lead six minutes into the
contest. Washington tied the game minutes later on a three-pointer
by Kevin Breslin (15 points, four rebounds) to knot the game at
13-13 midway through the half. Washington took a 37-28 lead into
halftime.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls regained the lead three
different times within a minute before Washington responded. SU led
57-54 after a Sean Whittaker layup with 9:38 left
in the game. Washington's Sal Schittino (12 points) drained a
three-pointer, a minute later, to tie the game once more. Tim
Kohlrus led all-scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds in the win
for the Shoremen.
Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's (Md.) College won the
tournament with an 84-81 comeback win over Johns Hopkins
University. McDaniel College took fifth-place with a 55-41 victory
over Frostburg State University while Stevenson defeated Goucher
College, 62-58, in the seventh-place game.
Salisbury and Washington will meet again on January 3, 2009 in
Salisbury, Md., for a 7 p.m. regular season nonconference game.
