SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University softball
swept Swarthmore College and Capital University in the first day of
the Sea Gull Tournament on Saturday at the SU Softball Field.
Salisbury (9-5) shut out Swarthmore 7-0 and turned around to beat
Capital 6-2 in the second game.
SU junior pitcher Stacy Davis (6-2) won both
games for the Sea Gulls in the circle. Davis pitched four scoreless
innings in each game. She allowed six hits, one walk and struck out
three against Swarthmore (3-4). In the second game, she allowed one
Capital (6-5) hit on one walk and struck out four.
In the first game against Swarthmore the Sea Gulls batted around
and scored six runs in the second inning. The Gulls loaded the
bases as senior Kurisha Hoffman stepped to the
plate. Hoffman laced a shot to right field which scored Ali
Ritter (1-for-3) and Lauren Brenneman
(1-for-2). Sophomore Brittany Lounge followed and
singled home freshman Kristin Lord. Sophomore
All-American Kelly Waskewicz knocked in Hoffman
and Lounge on her three-run home run to left field to give SU the
early 6-0 lead.
Senior Kortni Pedlow relieved Davis in the
fifth and closed out the final three innings with no runs, one hit
and one strikeout. The Sea Gulls added an insurance run in the
bottom of the sixth.
In the second game against Capital the Sea Gulls were the
designated visiting team. Salisbury pushed across a run in the top
of the first and added to that total in the second inning. The Sea
Gulls got to Capital starting pitcher Erin Willeke who allowed four
runs on six hits in three innings of work. Hoffman got things
started in the second inning as she slammed her second home run of
the season over the left field fence.
Willeke walked Lounge as Waskewicz came to bat. Waskewicz
grounded into a fielder's choice and reached base as the Crusaders
got the lead runner. Junior Rachel Hastings
(1-for-3) stepped to the plate against Willeke. Waskewicz stole
second base and advanced to third on an errant throw by Capital
catcher Maddy Buck. While the Crusaders stood around Waskewicz was
alert enough to steal home, as the ball was still in play. Hastings
doubled and scored on a RBI single by Davis. The Sea Gulls added a
run in the fourth and seventh to cap off their ninth win of the
season.
Capital scored a run in the sixth and seventh inning,
respectively.

Capital begins at 9 a.m. Salisbury will play Capital at 11 a.m.
followed by a 3 p.m. game against Wilson College. Swarthmore and
