VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 11 Lynchburg
Hornets were too much for Salisbury University to handle on Sunday
in a neutral site softball doubleheader a day after the Sea Gulls
upset No. 4 Louisiana College. The Hornets (12-0) took the first
game 1-0 and followed that up with a 6-3 win over the Gulls (3-3)
in the opening weekend of Salisbury's 2008 schedule.
Lynchburg scored its only run in the first game on a RBI double
by Amber James in the top of the fourth inning off Salisbury
starting pitcher Stacy Davis (2-1). Davis went the
distance and gave up four hits and four walks. The Sea Gulls only
managed three hits off Lynchburg starter Barbie Miles. Senior
Kurisha Hoffman had a double for the Gulls in the
loss.
In the second game, the Hornets plated two runs in the third,
fourth and fifth innings. Sea Gull starter Kortni
Pedlow (1-1) suffered the loss as she only lasted 2 2-3
innings. Davis came in on relief for two innings followed by junior
Rachel Hastings for 1 1-3 innings. Salisbury
scored a run in the fourth and two in the seventh inning. Hoffman
slammed a solo home run in the seventh. Jen
Cahall, Stacey Malarkey (two doubles) and
Hoffman each had two hits in the loss for SU.
Lynchburg's Katie Bruce recorded the complete game victory for
the Hornets.
Salisbury will next travel to Chestertown, Md., on Wednesday,
March 5, to face Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College at 2
p.m. in a non-conference game.
