YORK, Pa. - The No. 2 Salisbury University
women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals Sunday afternoon
on the road in York, Pa., as the Sea Gulls stomped York (Pa.)
College 22-4 in the home opener for the Spartans. Salisbury (5-0,
2-0 CAC) was led by sophomore Beth Rhodey (five
goals) who scored the first two goals for the maroon and gold.
Junior Jessica Chmielewski scored three of her
season-high four goals in the first half and even assisted on
Rhodey's third goal at the 20:27 mark. Senior Sue
Ackermann (two goals, two assists) scored twice in the
first half.
York (1-2, 0-2 CAC) broke up the Salisbury 8-0 run when Rachel
Papsan (two goals) scored a free position shot past Sea Gull goalie
Sonja Stuart (nine saves). SU responded with four
straight goals before each team tallied one final goal apiece
before the half where the Sea Gulls led 13-2.
The Spartans scored two early goals in the second half before
the Sea Gulls closed out the game with six unanswered goals.
Junior Robyn Bishop scored two goals and one
assist and won three draw controls for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury had
13 different goal scorers in the game and assisted on half of its
goals. Those Gulls who scored one goal include; Alexis
Morrell (two assists), Stephanie Cahill
(two assists), Logan Bilderback (two assists),
Jessica Liston, Molly McBride,
Lindy Walsh, Ashleigh Gender,
Kim Cudmore and Meghan Ricketts.
Sophomore goalie Natalie Pappas came in midway
through the second half to relieve Stuart in net for Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls won 14-of-27 draw controls, scooped up 20 ground
balls and forced 24 turnovers. SU was also 4-for-5 on free position
shots while the Spartans converted 2-of-6 free position shots. The
maroon and gold outshot the Spartans, 43-15.
Salisbury is off a week until it will play host to Catholic
University of America in a home non-conference game at Sea Gull
Stadium on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m.
