SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
against The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon to break
open a 2-2 game. SU held on and defeated the Lions 6-2 in the Sea
Gulls' second game of the day. It was four runs scored by No. 12
Ithaca College in the top of the seventh inning that prevented SU
from picking up two big wins as the Bombers won, 6-5.
Salisbury (12-6) used clutch hits and took advantage of two Lion
errors to score four runs against TCNJ (8-6) in the bottom of the
sixth inning in the second game. SU chased TCNJ starter Alex
Sietsma from the game and torched reliever Ashley Minervini for two
more runs before all was said and done. SU starting pitcher
Kortni Pedlow (3-1) earned the complete game win
as she allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out
four. Salisbury scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning
as Lauren Brenneman tripled home Kelly
Waskewicz and later scored on an Ali
Ritter sacrifice fly to left field. The Lions got on the
scoreboard in the third inning as Kelly Armstrong led off with a
solo home run. TCNJ later tied the game in the fifth as
Armstrong scored on a wild pitch. Salisbury's Brittany
Lounge added two hits, a run scored and a stolen base for
the Gulls in the win.
In the first game, Salisbury was two outs away from taking down
nationally ranked Ithaca as it clung to a 3-2 lead. Ithaca's Nicole
Cade stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a double
that cleared the bases. Bomber third baseman Allison Greaney later
scored Cade to give Ithaca four runs in the top of the seventh
inning.
Salisbury did not go quietly in the bottom half of the inning.
The Sea Gulls manufactured two runs as Ritter knocked in Lounge, a
pinch-runner, and freshman Kristin Lord had a RBI
single that scored Ashley Stern.
Waskewicz started the game with an opposite field home run to
right, her sixth homer of the season. Both team scored two runs
apiece in the second inning.
Junior Stacy Davis (7-3) suffered the loss for
the Sea Gulls as she gave up eight hits, walked five and struck out
four.
TCNJ defeated Ithaca 9-4 in the other game on Saturday. Lion
center field Danielle Hagel blasted a three-run home run in the
first inning as TCNJ scored three in the first inning, four in the
third and two in the sixth.
Salisbury will next begin its Capital Athletic Conference
schedule as the Sea Gulls host Wesley College on Tuesday, March 25
at 3 p.m.
