SALISBURY, Md. - The game was close for a half
but the No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team outscored
Roanoke College 11-4 in the second half as the Sea Gulls won 16-6
over the Maroons in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Sea
Gull Stadium.
Salisbury (11-0) scored the game's first two goals before
Roanoke scored two of the final five goals before the half where
the Sea Gulls led 5-2.
The Sea Gulls had three players score four goals apiece in the
win. Senior Sue Ackermann led all-scorers with
four goals and four assists (eight points). Ackermann, the Capital
Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, used several spin moves to
lose Roanoke defenders around the crease in the first half as she
now has 45 goals and 34 assists this season. Junior Jessica
Chmielewski (one assist) and sophomore Beth
Rhodey (two assists) scored four goals each. Rhodey scored
her six-points in the second half. Chmielewski now has 50 points
this season while Rhodey is one point behind her.
Junior Ashleigh Gender (two goals) and freshmen
Trish DiGirolomo and Lindy Walsh
were the other Sea Gull goal scorers.
Roanoke (3-6) was led by Gina Valles four goals and one assist.
Amanda Hutchins and Carolyn Miller added unassisted goals for the
Maroons.
Sonja Stuart made four saves in goal for the
Sea Gulls while Roanoke goalie Katlyn Scarlett made 17 saves (12 in
the first half).
Salisbury outshot Roanoke 42-15 and won 17-of-24 draw controls.
The Sea Gulls added 19 ground balls, were 12-for-13 on clears,
scored two free position goals and caused 14 of Roanoke's 22
turnovers.
The Sea Gulls will next be in action on Tuesday, March 25, as
they host CAC foe Wesley College at 4 p.m.
