SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team needed only 10 innings to record two wins, 9-1 and
17-0, over Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College on
Tuesday afternoon in the conference opener for the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury (14-6, 2-0 CAC) was dominant all day long as it
allowed just one run (unearned) on six hits as the Gulls struck out
13 Wolverines in the doubleheader. Wesley (2-12, 1-5 CAC) scored
its lone run in the first inning of Game 1. Senior Brandy Winhauer
laced a 2-out RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded to
plate sophomore Lyndsey Ellsworth, who singled earlier in the
inning. Wesley could have had more but junior second baseman
Stacey Malarkey made a diving stop on Winhauer's
single to prevent at least one more run from crossing the plate.
Junior Stacy Davis (8-3) picked up her eighth
win of the season as she went the distance in the first game.
Senior Kortni Pedlow improved her record to 4-1 on
the season as she threw the first four innings of the second game
as freshman Kim Ruppert closed out the fifth
inning.
Sophomore Kelly Waskewicz had a great day at
the plate going 5-for-8, including two home runs, a triple, six
RBIs, scored four runs and added a stolen base. In the first game,
she ended the game with a walk-off home run as her solo shot in the
fifth gave Salisbury the eight-run advantage it needed to end the
game early. She blasted a two-run home run and a triple in the
second game.
Sophomore Ali Ritter (2-for-3) drove in three
runs, two of which came on a two-run homer in first game. Sophomore
Lauren Brenneman (three hits, three RBIs) got into
the home run act, as well, with a solo shot in the second game.
Senior Ashley Stern got the start in Game 2 and
turned in a fine performance as she recorded two hits and three
RBIs.
Wesley was led offensively by Ellsworth who went 3-for-3 in Game
1 with a run scored. Senior Jessica Morgan recorded the Wolverines
only hit in the second game.
The maroon and gold will return to action on Saturday, March 29,
as they host CAC foe Villa Julie College at 1 p.m.
