SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 8 ranked Salisbury
University baseball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College, 4-1,
Thursday afternoon at Sea Gull Field in front of a crowd of 113.
The win marked Salisbury's 20th consecutive and evened SU's season
series with the Marlins at one apiece. It was the Marlins (15-9-1)
that handed the Sea Gulls their only loss this season back on
February 9 with a 5-4 win in 10 innings.
Salisbury (20-1) held a 1-0 lead as they went into the
bottom of the fifth inning with the power of the
line-up slated to appear. Sophomore first
baseman Mike Celenza stepped to the
plate as senior Randy Boyle (1-for-2) stood at
second base. Celenza cranked a home run over the right field fence
to give the Gulls a three run advantage. The home run is
Celenza's fourth this season.
SU added a final insurance run in the bottom of seventh inning.
Senior Justin Armiger doubled, his 10th of the
season, then scored on a RBI single by senior Mark
Bostwick.
Freshman starter Dustin Herbert (6-0) pitched
eight innings of scoreless ball against the Marlins. The
left-hander dug the Sea Gulls out of trouble in the top
of the sixth inning when a SU error placed VWC runners at
second and third base with no outs. Herbert struck out
the next two Marlin batters. He then intentionally walked
the game-tying run to first base. VWC had its best chance to get
back into the game with the bases loaded but Herbert forced
Matt Sadin to ground out to end the inning. Junior Jeff
Feigl closed out the game in the ninth as he struck out
the side.
The maroon and gold look to continue their win streak as they
host Capital Athletic Conference opponent Gallaudet University
on Saturday, March 29, for a doubleheader that will start
at Noon. SU defeated Gallaudet 23-2 in 7-innings on Wednesday in
Washington, D.C.
