SALISBURY, Md. - The top-ranked Salisbury
University men's lacrosse team held onto a 14-10 non-conference
victory against Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at a
wind-whipped Sea Gull Stadium as 473 fans braved the near freezing
temperatures. This the first time in 30 games that the Sea Gull
defense surrendered a double digit goal total since May 28, 2006.
Salisbury was led by its All-American trio of junior
Kylor Berkman (two goals, three assists) and
seniors Matt Hickman (two goals, one assist) and
Greg Titus (three goals). Junior Patrick
Bonanno (two goals, one assist) was the other Gull to
tally two or more goals in the win. Salisbury never trailed in the
game and led by as many as six goals, 11-5 with 6:42 left in the
third quarter, but was plagued by turnovers and penalties.
The Sea Gulls were issued a season-high 13 penalties. In
Salisbury's previous four games they committed 13 penalties,
combined. SU's man-down unit did an excellent job killing the
penalties as OWU was only able to score twice on the 13
opportunities. OWU also spent a considerable amount of time in the
box as the Battling Bishops served 15 penalties. The Sea Gulls were
3-for-15 on extra-man opportunities.
Salisbury scored the game's first two goals before the Bishops
answered 16 seconds after Bruce Richardson's
unassisted goal at the 7:46 mark. OWU trailed 3-1 after one quarter
but scored back-to-back goals, within 14 seconds, early in the
second quarter to cut the Sea Gull lead to one, 4-3. Titus scored
two of the next three goals in the game to send the Gulls into
halftime up 6-4.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls got some breathing room as it
scored five of the next six goals, including four unanswered marks,
to take their biggest lead 11-5. The final two goals in that run
featured a Bonanno unassisted goal followed by a face-off win by
sophomore Ryan Finch who assisted sophomore
Jake DeLillo for the six-second strike. The
Bishops scored five of the final eight goals to close the game to a
four-goal margin.
SU outshot OWU 40-25 and scooped up 47 ground balls. Salisbury
turned the ball over 30 times, one shy of its season-high mark, but
forced 18 of OWU's 32 turnovers. Seniors Ryan
Browning and Ben Sandlin along with
Berkman each caused four turnovers apiece for the maroon and gold.
Junior goalie Riley Clark made 10 stops in between
the pipes for SU.
OWU was led by Chris Eccles (three goals, one assist) and
Harrison Iuliano (two goals) on the offensive side of the field.
Battling Bishop goalie Ryan Perone made 18 saves in the game to
keep his team within striking distance.
Sea Gull face-off specialists Finch and senior Ryan
Brown won 19-of-25 face-offs. Brown won 11-of-15 attempts
while Finch won the other eight draws out of 10 chances.
The win increases Salisbury's numerous winning streaks. The Sea
Gulls have won 29 straight games since the beginning of last
season. SU has won 64 consecutive games at Sea Gull Stadium and 68
straight regular-season contests. The Sea Gulls have won the last
six games with the Battling Bishops since a 14-13 overtime loss to
OWU in 2002.
Salisbury will travel to Arlington, Va., on Wednesday, March 12,
to face Marymount (Va.) University for a 3:30 p.m. Capital Athletic
Conference contest.
