SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team swept York (Pa.) College in a key Capital Athletic
Conference doubleheader at home Friday afternoon. The Sea Gulls won
5-1 and 11-0 in five innings to hand the Spartans (21-7, 10-2 CAC)
their first conference losses this season.
The wins put SU (23-7, 9-1 CAC) in a position to host next
week's CAC tournament as the maroon and gold close out the
conference regular-season with a doubleheader on Sunday at Hood
College in Frederick, Md.
Sophomore catcher Lauren Brenneman (3-for-6)
had a stellar game for the maroon and gold as she blasted two home
runs and drove in six runs in both games. Fellow sophomores
Kelly Waskewicz (3-for-6, two RBI) and Jen
Cahall (3-for-5, three RBI) each had three hits in both
games and scored four combined runs.
Salisbury came out on fire in the second game as the Sea Gulls
scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior
Meagan O'Gara set the tone with a three-run double
to center field to give SU the early lead, 3-0. A Waskewicz's RBI
double and a walk earned by Ali Ritter set the
table for Brenneman's mammoth three-run homer. She launched a Megan
Mickles (10-3) pitch down the left field line into the pine trees
beyond the outfield fence. The Sea Gulls would tack on two
additional runs in the third and fourth innings.
The 11-0 lead was enough for senior pitcher Kortni
Pedlow (7-2) to record her seventh win of the season on
Senior Day as the Sea Gulls hosted their final regular season
games. Pedlow allowed one Spartan hit, walked one and struck out
one in the complete game shutout. Pedlow is a four-year
letterwinner in softball and field hockey at Salisbury.
Salisbury's other seniors are Ashley Stern
and Kurisha Hoffman, both four-year letterwinners
for the Sea Gulls. Hoffman is the starting third baseman for the
Gulls where she has started 100 games and played in 127 entering
today's doubleheader. The crafty third baseman has a career
fielding percentage of 93 percent. Stern is a versatile outfielder
who has a 96 percent fielding percentage. She is also a member of
Beta Sigma Gamma and helped SU place second at the prestigious
Goodman Accounting competition this year.
In the first game, Salisbury scored a run in the second and
third innings to go up 2-0 on York early. The Sea Gulls added three
additional runs in the fifth. Brenneman was a perfect 2-for-2 at
the plate as she slammed a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kristin Lord (2-for-2) added a RBI double
in the fifth as well.
On the mound SU junior Stacy Davis (14-3)
earned the win as she tossed her 12th complete game of the season
as she held Spartans scoreless until the seventh inning where York
pushed across a run. The right-hander allowed eight hits on five
walks and struck out eight.
