FREDERICK, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team swept Hood College 8-0, 8-2, in the Sea Gulls' final
Capital Athletic Conference regular-season games this
year Sunday on the road. The victory secured the top-seed in
next week's 2008 CAC tournament where SU earned a first round bye.
Salisbury (25-7, 11-1 CAC) won five of its final six CAC games
in a four-day span. SU will host the winner between Hood
College and Wesley College on Thursday, April 17, at 4 p.m.
Sophomore Kelly Waskewicz slammed three home
runs in the second game against the Blazers as the All-American
shortstop now has 15 for the season and is one shy of tying the
school career record of 33. She led off the second game with a solo
home run followed by a two-run shot in the second and sixth
innings. The three home runs in a game ties an unofficial
conference record, as the stat has not been kept in years past.
Former SU standout Erin Ruest had three home runs in a game against
former CAC member Catholic University on April 6, 2004.
Waskewicz did break the CAC single-game record for total bases
with 15, tied the mark for hits in a game (four) and was two RBI
shy of the record of nine. She finished the day 6-for-8, both games
combined, with two steals, four runs and eight RBI.
Junior Stacy Davis (15-3) won her third game in
the circle for the Sea Gulls this week as tossed three scoreless
innings against Hood (15-11, 5-7 CAC) in the first game. She
allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four. Davis helped
her cause as the plate where she went 2-for-3 with 5 RBI, three of
which came on her home run in the fourth.
Sophomore Jen Cahall added to
the offensive success as she finished the doubleheader 4-for-7
with two runs scored. Senior Kortni Pedlow (8-2)
got the start for SU in game two as she allowed two runs in
four innings where she struck out a season-high seven batters.
Freshman Kelsey Mills, made relief appearances in
both games, where she held Hood scoreless for five innings. She
surrendered one hit, walked two and struck out six.
Salisbury started both games with a quick 2-0 lead as the Sea
Gulls scored in every inning but one in the first game and scored
two runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings in the
second game. SU doubled the amount of Hood hits, 18-9, while the
Blazers committed seven errors in the field. The Sea Gulls were
error free.
