SALISBURY Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team started off the Capital Athletic Conference
tournament strong as they shut out Wesley College 6-0 in a second
round game Thursday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls (26-7), the top-seed in the tournament, will host
this weekend's championship rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Salisbury will face third-seed University of Mary Washington on
Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. The Eagles defeated second-seed York
(Pa.) College 5-0 in a second round game on Thursday.
Sophomore Kelly Waskewicz had a record setting
game as she led off the game with her 16th home run of the season,
which tied the school career record of 33. This is the fourth time
this season, second game in a row, Waskewicz has led off the game
with a home run. The All-American was able to tie the home run
record as she went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs. She
is now one home run shy of tying the single season home run record
of 17 which she set last year.
Salisbury led 3-0 going into the fifth inning where the maroon
and gold doubled the score thanks to sophomore Lauren
Brenneman's two-run triple which scored Waskewicz and
sophomore Brittany Lounge. Junior Stacey
Malarkey added two hits and a RBI in three at-bats.
Junior Stacy Davis (16-3) earned another win as
she pitched a scoreless four innings. Senior Kortni
Pedlow and freshmen Kelsey Mills and
Kim Ruppert each added one inning
of relief for the maroon and gold.
The Wolverines weren't able to mount a comeback as they ended
the game with three hits. Lyndsey Ellsworth led Wesley with two
hits and Marie Elzey added one.
The CAC championship round begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning
as York (Pa.) College and fourth-seed Hood College face each other
in an elimination game. At Noon, sixth-seed Villa Julie College and
fifth-seed Wesley College play in another elimination game. After
the Salisbury-Mary Washington game at 2 p.m. there will be a fourth
game at 4 p.m. The championship will be played on Sunday.
