Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - Sophomore
catcher Lauren Brenneman delivered the game-ending
triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Salisbury
University to its 13th Capital Athletic Conference championship.
The top-seed Sea Gulls shut out second-seed University of Mary
Washington to clinch the 12 straight conference crown for the
maroon and gold.
Salisbury (28-7) jumped out early on Mary Washington (23-15) as
the Gulls scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. SU led
6-0 as it went to the bottom half of the sixth inning. Senior third
baseman Kurisha Hoffman (2-for-3, two runs, RBI)
hit a single to left field to begin the inning. Sophomore
All-American Kelly Waskewicz (4-for-4, two runs,
two RBI) followed with a single to set the table for Brenneman
(1-for-4, three RBI), who stepped to the plate with one out. She
laced a triple, just fair, down the right field line to score
Hoffman and Waskewicz to end the game.
Senior Kortni Pedlow (9-2) earned the victory
in the circle for the Sea Gulls as she pitched six scoreless
innings where she gave up three hits, walked one and struck out
six.
The Gulls manufactured two runs in the first inning as Waskewicz
led off with a single to left field. She advanced on a wild pitch
by Mary Washington starter Kirsten Rowell (18-10). Sophomore
Brittany Lounge sacrificed Waskewicz to third
before Brenneman's ground out plated the SU shortstop. A few
batters later sophomore first baseman Ali Ritter
(3-for-3, two RBI) hit a single into left which scored second
baseman Stacey Malarkey (2-for-3, two runs) to
give the Gulls the 2-0 lead.
Salisbury's sophomore combination of Waskewicz, Brenneman and
Ritter combined to bat 8-for-11 at the plate and drive in seven of
the Sea Gulls' eight runs.
The Sea Gulls broke open the game in the fourth inning as
Salisbury pushed across three runs to increase its lead to 5-0.
Hoffman got things started with a RBI single that scored
pinch-runner Alex Winstead. Waskewicz followed
with her 12th double of the season that brought home junior
outfielder Meaghan O'Gara (1-for-3, one run) and
Hoffman.
Then at the top of the fifth Eagle shortstop Kaitlin Petrella
hit a home run but Salisbury's defense was quick to notice she
never touched home plate. Pedlow threw the newly issued ball to
Brenneman, who stood on home plate, to record the out. UMW's left
fielder Cathy Hull was the only other Eagle to record a hit in the
game as she batted 2-for-3 at the plate in the leadoff position.
Ritter knocked in Malarkey, again, in the fifth inning to
increase SU's lead to 6-0.
Rowell suffered her 10th loss of the season as she gave up eight
runs on 13 hits, walked one and struck out four Sea Gulls.
Mary Washington advanced to the CAC championship game after it
defeated sixth-seed Villa Julie 3-2 in the first game on Sunday
morning. This was the second time in the two days that SU hosted
the CAC tournament that the Sea Gulls faced the Eagles. Salisbury
defeated Mary Washington 4-3 on Saturday in an eight-inning game.
