SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Salisbury
University volleyball team won two more matches on Sunday to
increase its winning streak to 10 straight as the Sea Gulls
won the 6th Annual Garnet Classic hosted by Swarthmore College. SU
defeated the host Garnet twice, 3-0 and 3-1, on Sunday to
claim the championship and post a perfect 4-0 record for the
weekend.
The Sea Gulls (10-1) are off to their best start under Coach
Margie Knight since she took over at her Alma
Mater in 1997.
Salisbury was led by junior Rachel Downes who
was named the tournament's MVP. Downes and senior Stacey
Krebs were selected to the all-tournament team.
In Sunday's first match, the Sea Gulls won three
consecutive sets to shut out the Garnet, 25-19, 25-17, and 25-17.
SU was led by junior middle hitter Nicole
Massarelliand Krebs. Massarelli tallied nine kills on the
day in 16 attempts while Krebs added 10 kills. Sophomore outside
hitter Lexy Fitzkee also had a fine day for SU
with seven kills in 11 attempts and added five block assists.
Senior setter Jaime Marzocchi paced the Sea Gulls
with 26 assists.
The great Sea Gull play continued into the second match with a
victory in their first set 25-13. Swarthmore took the second set
22-25 but Salisbury was victorious in the final two sets to
take the 3-1 decision. Krebs led Salisbury with a
double-double (11 kills, 11 digs) while Marzocchi added 35 assists.
Downes just missed a double-double of her own with 11 kills and
nine digs.
The Sea Gulls will return to action on Wednesday, September 17,
at home against Marymount (Va.) University at 7 p.m. in a Capital
Athletic Conference match.
