SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury
University volleyball team continued its dominance on day two of
the Sea Gull Classic as the maroon and gold only
needed six sets to claim the championship.
SU knocked off The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey
twice on Saturday by the identical score of 3-0 at the Maggs
Center. The Sea Gulls have won 15 straight matches.
Salisbury (15-1) defeated the Ospreys (11-5) in the first match
by the score of 25-23, 25-16, and 25-18. Classic MVP
Nicole Massarelli paced the offense with 10 kills
and three service aces as Richard Stockton could not find an answer
for her. She was also a defensive specialist as she stuffed six
Osprey kill attempts (two solo, four assists).
Senior Stacey Krebs added nine kills and two
solo blocks, while sophomore Alexandria Malesick
recorded six kills and two solo blocks. Junior Rachel
Downes turned in a fine all-around game with seven kills,
a service ace and 14 digs. Junior Gabby Long and
senior Jaime Marzocchi, both named to the
all-tournament team, worked together to set up the front line.
Long was 20-for-21 on pass attempts and recorded 12 digs, while
Marzocchi recorded 31 assists.
The second match saw more dominance from the Sea Gulls as
they won 25-22, 25-16, 26-24. Stockton put together a nice run in
the third set, but the Sea Gulls were able to overcome some late
miscues to pull out the win and claim the classic title.
Massarelli had a monster match as she converted 11-of-17 kill
attempts, recorded three service aces and assisted on two blocks.
The combination of Long and Marzocchi were at it again. Long was
all over the court as she made 18 successful passes and also
recorded 22 digs. Marzocchi matched her assist total from the first
match with 31 assists. Malesick, Krebs and Downes each added
eight, seven and five kills, respectively.
For the classic, Salisbury finished undefeated (4-0) and lost
just one set. Richard Stockton finished 2-2, and both Virginia
Wesleyan College and Swarthmore College finished with a 1-3
mark.
The maroon and gold will continue their homestand on Tuesday,
