SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury
University volleyball team won its 16 straight match of the season
as the Sea Gulls defeated Wesley College, 3-0, on Tuesday
evening at the Maggs Center in a Capital Athletic Conference
contest. Salisbury improves to 16-1 this season and ties
the school record for the best start to a season since the program
began in 1972. In the inaugural season of volleyball at SU the Sea
Gulls won their first 16 matches before they lost the final six to
finish the year 16-6.
Salisbury (16-1, 3-0 CAC) snapped the Wolverines' school
record eight-game winning streak with the 25-12,
25-12, 25-23 straight set victory. This is the 12 time the Sea
Gulls have won in straight sets this season. Wesley (9-4, 1-1 CAC)
could not overcome the powerful Sea Gull offense who mixed up their
attack angles all evening long.
SU coach Margie Knight played all 16 players on
her roster in the victory. Eleven different players recorded kills
in the game, led by junior Rachel Downes (eight
kills). Senior Stacey Krebs and sophomore
Lexy Fitzkee added six kills each. CAC Player of
the Week Nicole Massarelli, sophomores
Alexandria Malesick and Kathleen
Cinelli chipped in five kills apiece.
Sophomore Annie Belott led the defensive effort
for the Sea Gulls with nine digs and sophomore Melissa
Stansbury contributed six digs. Freshman Lindsey
Saltzman (six assists) came out firing serves over the net
in the third set and recorded a match high two service aces. Senior
setter Jaime Marzocchi recorded 11 assists in the
first set and watched fellow teammates junior Stephanie
Carey (10 assists) and Saltzman take over the setting
duties for remained of the match.
The maroon and gold will look to extend their winning streak and
set the school record for the best start to a season this weekend
as they will host the Salisbury Invitational. Salisbury will face
Susquehanna University in the first match of the invitational
on Friday, September 26, at 4 p.m.
