READING, Pa. - The No. 12
Salisbury University football team gutted out a hard fought 30-28
non-conference victory on Saturday evening against Albright College
before a crowd of 300 at Shirk Stadium.
Salisbury (1-0) was led by sophomore slot Bryan
Woolson, who rushed for a career-high 112 yards on nine
carries and scored two second half touchdowns. Woolson had a long
run of 55 yards and scored from two yards out in the third quarter
and found the end zone in the fourth quarter with 5:18 left in the
game. Woolson's final score was the eventual game-winning score for
the maroon and gold. Woolson only played in three games last season
an accumulated 73 yards on 10 carries.
Albright quarterback Tanner Kelly (17-for-27, 225 yards)
orchestrated two last minute touchdown drives for the Lions (0-1)
in the fourth quarter. Kelly found senior wide receiver AJ Hill
from eight yards out with 3:42 left. The Lion's extra-point kick
was blocked by SU senior All-American Jarrell
Chandler.
On the ensuing kickoff the Lions recovered the on-side kick and
started on their own 45-yard-line. Kelly needed 13 plays and over
two minutes to find the end zone once more. The junior quarterback
threw his third touchdown pass of the game with a two-yard pass to
wide receiver Nate Romig (nine catches, 139 yards) with 52 seconds
left in the game.
The Lions tried another on-side kick but this time Salisbury
recovered and ran out the clock to secure the win. Albright scored
21 points in the fourth quarter as the Lions racked up 173 yards of
offense.
Chandler led the way on defense for Salisbury as he made a
team-high 11 tackles, two sacks and had five tackles for loss that
resulted in 22 yards.
The Sea Gulls kicked off the new season with a quick strike
touchdown on their first possession. Senior quarterback
Ronnie Curley (20 carries, 71 yards) rushed for 34
yards and scored the touchdown to cap a four play, 47-yard drive
that lasted only a minute and 44 seconds.
Salisbury's next possession led to three points as junior kicker
Andrew Geisert kicked a 24-yard field goal with
3:26 left in the first quarter as the Gulls led 10-0. The two teams
played a scoreless second quarter as the maroon and gold took the
10-point lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls continued with the run game
behind Woolson and senior superback Shelby Fisher
(18 carries, 101 yards). Woolson got things started with his first
score late in the third quarter. A minute into the fourth quarter
Fisher rumbled in from 12 yards out. Woolson scored his second
touchdown eight minutes later as SU scored touchdowns on three of
four possessions during that stretch to increase the Sea Gull lead
to 15 points, 30-15.
Salisbury rolled up 380 yards on the ground and 396 total
offense yards. The Sea Gull defense stuffed the Albright run game
as the Lions only gained 38 yards. Albright passed for 225 yards
against SU.
Salisbury defeated Albright last season 42-12 to begin the
season. This game marked the first-ever appearance at Shirk Stadium
for the maroon and gold.
The Sea Gulls return home and will host Geneva College on
Saturday, September 13, at 6 p.m. for the first-ever SU football
night game at Sea Gull Stadium.
