GETTYSBURG, Pa. - It was a special weekend for
Salisbury University volleyball and senior Stacey
Krebs. The Sea Gulls (5-1) were one of two schools out of
a field of 18 at the Battlefield Classic, hosted by Gettysburg
College, to go a perfect 4-0 during the two-day tournament.
Salisbury defeated The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 3-1,
and Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, on Saturday to win Pool BB.
Eastern University was the other school to go 4-0.
Krebs recorded back-to-back double-doubles on Saturday and
cranked out 28 combined kills to surpass 1,400 kills for her
career. On Friday night, Krebs became the all-time kills' leader in
school history as she passed Donna Hudson's (1997-2000) mark of
1,366 in the Eastern Mennonite match.
"I have been really fortunate to play under such
a wonderful coach and with such a great group of teammates
over the past few years," said Krebs. "I am honored to have broken
the record but I am just really happy with the team's success this
weekend and what we have done thus far this season."
Salisbury defeated Richard Stockton 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14
as senior Jaime Marzocchi (50 assists, 11 digs)
and Krebs (17 kills, 14 digs) had double-doubles. Junior
Nicole Massarelli was solid upfront as she had 17
kills on 31 attempts and added two block solos and three block
assists. Fellow junior Rachel Downes made seven
kills and 10 digs while junior Gabby Long led the
team with 20 digs.
In the second match, SU handed Johns Hopkins its first loss of
the tournament with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-20 straight sets victory.
Krebs led the way with her second double-double of the season with
11 kills and 15 digs and added three block assists. Massarelli
slammed down 11 kills on 21 attempts and four block assists while
Downes added nine kills, six digs and two service aces. Long made a
team-high 28 digs and Marzocchi had 38 assists in the win.
Sophomore Alexandria Malesick chipped in eight
kills and four block assists.
Massarelli and Marzocchi were named to the all-tournament team
for their play in the Battlefield Classic. Massrelli led all Sea
Gull hitters with a .462 percentage followed by Malesick (.395) and
Krebs (.307).
The Sea Gulls will begin their Capital Athletic Conference on
Wednesday with a road match against the University of Mary
Washington at 7 p.m.
