Krebs surpasses 1,400 career kills, Salisbury 4-0 at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - It was a special weekend for Salisbury University volleyball and senior Stacey Krebs. The Sea Gulls (5-1) were one of two schools out of a field of 18 at the Battlefield Classic, hosted by Gettysburg College, to go a perfect 4-0 during the two-day tournament. Salisbury defeated The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 3-1, and Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, on Saturday to win Pool BB. Eastern University was the other school to go 4-0.

Krebs recorded back-to-back double-doubles on Saturday and cranked out 28 combined kills to surpass 1,400 kills for her career. On Friday night, Krebs became the all-time kills' leader in school history as she passed Donna Hudson's (1997-2000) mark of 1,366 in the Eastern Mennonite match.

"I have been really fortunate to play under such a wonderful coach and with such a great group of teammates over the past few years," said Krebs. "I am honored to have broken the record but I am just really happy with the team's success this weekend and what we have done thus far this season."

Salisbury defeated Richard Stockton 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14 as senior Jaime Marzocchi (50 assists, 11 digs) and Krebs (17 kills, 14 digs) had double-doubles. Junior Nicole Massarelli was solid upfront as she had 17 kills on 31 attempts and added two block solos and three block assists. Fellow junior Rachel Downes made seven kills and 10 digs while junior Gabby Long led the team with 20 digs.

In the second match, SU handed Johns Hopkins its first loss of the tournament with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-20 straight sets victory. Krebs led the way with her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs and added three block assists. Massarelli slammed down 11 kills on 21 attempts and four block assists while Downes added nine kills, six digs and two service aces. Long made a team-high 28 digs and Marzocchi had 38 assists in the win. Sophomore Alexandria Malesick chipped in eight kills and four block assists.

Massarelli and Marzocchi were named to the all-tournament team for their play in the Battlefield Classic. Massrelli led all Sea Gull hitters with a .462 percentage followed by Malesick (.395) and Krebs (.307).

The Sea Gulls will begin their Capital Athletic Conference on Wednesday with a road match against the University of Mary Washington at 7 p.m.
