Eagles defeat Sea Gulls in overtime, SU has four-game winning streak snapped

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Salisbury University men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Capital Athletic Conference opponent University of Mary Washington on Wednesday evening at the Goolrick Gymnasium in Fredericksburg, Va., before a crowd of 257. The loss snaps Salisbury's four-game win streak.

Salisbury (9-10, 6-4 CAC) was paced by a steady effort from three-point range as the Sea Gulls knocked down 11 three-point field goals in the game. Junior guard Devin Jones (seven rebounds, three steals) led the Sea Gulls with a team-high 17 points. Four other Sea Gulls joined Jones in double figures. Sophomore center Chris McGrew (13 points, seven rebounds), senior forward Sean Whittaker (11 points, two rebounds) and junior guard Greg Palmer (10 points, six rebounds, three assists) helped pace SU. Junior Drew Dickson (two rebounds) provided a spark off the bench with 11 points.

The Sea Gulls opened up the first half on fire. SU raced out to an 11-4 lead three minutes into the contest but were immediately answered by an 11-3 run by the Eagles, which dropped the Sea Gull lead to just one point, 15-14. The two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half before Dickson buried a three-pointer with 56 seconds left to send SU into the half with a 30-27 lead.

The second half proved to be quite a battle between the two teams. UMW used a 7-0 run at the start of the half to race to a 34-30 lead at the 17:34 mark. Salisbury would answer with a 6-0 run on consecutive three-pointers by Jones and Whittaker to take a one-pont lead. The rest of the game saw nine ties as neither team would take a lead higher than four points. Salisbury trailed by three points, 70-67, with less than two minutes left before Jones buried a three-pointer at the 1:47 mark to tie the score, 70-70, and send the game into overtime.

After both teams shot over 50 percent and would combine for 83 points in the second half, the extra period saw each team hit only one field goal apiece. The difference was from the free-throw line as the Eagles were a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe in overtime.

Mary Washington (10-7, 7-2 CAC) sweeps the regular-season series between the two teams as the Eagles had five players register double figures. UMW was led by freshman Tad Dickman who scored a game-high 19 points. Senior Kiernan Whitworth pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and added 10 points for the double-double. Mary Washington shot an astounding 21-for-22 from the free-throw line.

The maroon and gold look to move up in the CAC standings when they return home on Monday, February 2, to take on St. Mary's (Md.) College at 8 p.m. The Seahawks bested the Sea Gulls earlier this season by a score of 63-52.
