Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's basketball team captured an exciting 87-85 overtime victory against Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College in a non-conference game Saturday evening at the Maggs Center.

Junior guard Devin Jones scored the game-winner with a jump shot from the free-throw line with 1.9 seconds left in the first overtime period. The Shoremen (4-4) tied the game with seven seconds left on a jumper from guard Tim Kohlrus (34 points, seven rebounds). The win is the first of the New Year for the Sea Gulls (4-7) and their third straight.

Salisbury was led by junior guard Greg Palmer as he scored a career-high 33 points, recorded five rebounds and blocked one shot. Jones also established a new career-high with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Matt DeLizio was the final Sea Gull in double figures as he recorded a double-double with 11 points and rebounds.

The game started off slow as this was the first game in over three weeks for both teams. The first basket was four minutes in by Sea Gull sophomore center Chris McGrew (eight points, seven rebounds). The teams traded baskets throughout the half before the Sea Gulls made a run. SU led 36-35 with just under three minutes to play when the maroon and gold went on a 9-2 run to take a 45-37 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets but SU continued to hold a steady lead. The Shoremen slowly chipped away at the lead and regained the lead, 59-58, at the 10:32 mark. Washington held a five-point lead, 75-70, with 3:16 left in the game before SU rallied. Palmer scored the next seven points to give the Gulls a two-point advantage, 77-75, before the Shoremen knotted the game at 77 on a pair of free throws with 1:26 left. Kohlrus missed two free throw attempts for the Shoremen with seven seconds left in regulation and SU's final shot missed the mark to send the game into overtime.

The overtime period was just as closely contested as the first two halves played out as both teams held a lead at some point in the extra frame. Jones gave SU the 84-83 lead when he nailed a jumper with 30 seconds left and then added a free throw 10 seconds later at the line. Washington responded, once more, behind the hot shooting of Kohlrus who made a jumper to tie the game with seven seconds left.

The Sea Gulls shot 49 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from three-point range in the win. SU outrebounded Washington 51-39. The Shoremen shot 36.6 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from behind the three-point line.

Salisbury will now turn its attention back to the Capital Athletic Conference as the Sea Gulls face conference opponents for the remainder of the season. SU (1-1 CAC) will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) College on Wednesday, January 7, to face the nationally ranked Seahawks. The game against No. 20 St. Mary's (9-2, 2-0 CAC) is scheduled to tip at 8 p.m.
