Volleyball claims top spot in CAC tournament with 3-0 win at Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. -The Salisbury University volleyball team collected a 3-0 victory at Stevenson University Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference play and lock up the top seed in the CAC tournament, scheduled for the first week of November.

The Sea Gulls took down Stevenson 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 with balanced scoring. Four different Sea Gulls had either five or six kills. They were led by senior outside hitter Rachel Downes (Salisbury, Md.) and senior middle hitter Nicole Massarelli (Clarksville, Md.), who each finished with six. Downes also had 11 digs while Massarelli added three assist blocks.

Junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee (Fallston, Md.) and freshman middle hitter Chelsea Glowacki (Poolesville, Md.) each had five kills, Glowacki doing so on 12 attempts with no errors. Freshman setter Carley Todd (Centerport, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 16 assists and four assist blocks while sophomore setter Lindsey Saltzman (Penfield, N.Y.) added 10 assists.

The Sea Gulls got strong defensive play from senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air, Md.), who finished with 16 digs, and junior outside hitter Melissa Stansbury (Eldersburg, Md.), who had nine digs and was outstanding passing the ball off serve receive.

With the win, the Sea Gulls push their winning streak against CAC opponents to 23 matches. The final regular-season CAC match of the season will be Wednesday, Oct. 28, when Salisbury hosts St. Mary's.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action Friday, Oct. 23, when they host Christopher Newport University at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m
