SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team defeated CAC opponent St. Mary's College (Md.) in
five sets on Wednesday night, closing out its
second-consecutive perfect CAC season. The Sea Gulls won the match
20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13.
The Sea Gulls were led offensively by senior middle hitter Nicole
Massarelli (Clarksville, Md.) and junior outside
hitter Kelly Williams
(Laurel, Md.) who tallied 12 and 14 kills,
respectively. Junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee (Fallston,
Md.) had eight kills of her own, and freshman middle
hitter Chelsea Glowacki
(Poolesville, Md.) chipped in with seven more.
Fitzkee also had 13 digs.
Senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air,
Md.) finished the match with 24 digs, as this was her
final regular-season home match. Long, Massarelli and senior
outside hitter Rachel Downes
(Salisbury, Md.) all celebrated senior night with a
key conference victory.
Salisbury (24-4, 8-0 CAC) fell behind early in the first game
and despite a strong attempt to come back, it dropped the game to
the Seahawks. After the first-set loss, the Sea Gulls claimed
a pair of close games to establish a 2-1 lead in the match, but St.
Ma
ry's (16-11, 4-4 CAC) would not give in, taking a big lead in
the fourth game and forcing a fifth set.
The fifth game remained close the entire time as the teams
traded points. With the score tied at 13, freshman setter
Carley
Todd (Centerport, N.Y.) made a kill to bring Salisbury
within one point of the win. On the following serve, Massarelli
scored a service ace, her second of the night, to give the Sea
Gulls the win in her final home regular season match.
Salisbury will play again in the St. Mary's Tournament at St.
Mary's College on Oct. 30. The Gulls will face off against
Washington & Lee at 3 p.m.
