ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Salisbury
University volleyball team opened up play in its final
regular-season event of the year with a pair of three-set victories
on Friday. The Sea Gulls topped Washington & Lee, 25-18, 25-17,
25-20, at the Seahawk Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's
(Md.) College, before closing out action on the first day with a
25-13, 25-20, 25-18 win against the City College of New York.
Salisbury was led in the W&L match by middle hitters
freshman Chelsea
Glowacki (Poolesville, Md.) and senior Nicole
Massarelli (Clarksville, Md.). Each player came up
with eight kills in the match and had just one error, while adding
an assist block. Massarelli also had a solo block.
Senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air,
Md.) had a dominant match in the back row with 19
digs, in just the three sets, and four service aces. Freshman right
side hitter Jenna Shay (Dunkirk,
Md.) and senior outside hitter Rachel Downes
(Salisbury, Md.) each had seven kills. Shay did so on
just 11 attempts, while Downes added five digs in the match.
Junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee
(Fallston, Md.) was also strong on defense with 13
digs to go along with six kills and sophomore setter Lindsey Salzman
(Penfield, N.Y.) had 17 assists in 36 set attempts and
added five digs.
The Sea Gulls' win against CCNY featured a number of
players making an impact and stellar blocking throughout the match.
Salisbury came up with nine total blocks in the victory, led by
freshman setter Carley
Todd's (Centerport, N.Y.) four assist blocks and
one solo block. Todd also added 14 assists.
Saltzman was good for 11 assists in the match while Long and
junior outside hitter Melissa
Stansbury (Eldersburg, Md.) added 12 and eight digs,
respectively.
Massarelli came through with eight kills and four assist blocks
while Glowacki and Downes each had six kills and three assist
blocks.
Salisbury will close out the regular season with two matches
Saturday in St. Mary's City. The Sea Gulls will take on
Bridgewater (Va.) at noon and Catholic University of America at 2
p.m.
