ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of
victories at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary's (Md.)
College on Saturday. The Sea Gulls defeated Bridgewater College,
29-27, 14-25, 25-15, 25-20, and then closed out the tournament with
a win over Catholic University, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16. SU and No. 23
Eastern University both finished the tournament 4-0, but the Sea
Gulls won the tournament based on their 12-1 set record as opposed
to Eastern's 12-4 record for the weekend.
In the first match Saturday, the Sea Gulls (28-4) took down
Bridgewater 3-1. The Gulls were led by freshman middle hitter
Chelsea Glowacki
(Poolesville, Md.), who slammed home a career-high 13
kills. Senior outside hitter Rachel Downes
(Salisbury, Md.) had another strong match as she
totaled eight kills, 11 digs and three block assists. Junior
outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee (Fallston,
Md.) had 10 kills and 14 digs. Senior libero
Gabby Long
(Bel Air, Md.) had 20 digs for the Gulls.
In the second match of the day, a 3-0 victory against Catholic,
Glowacki led the way again as she had nine kills and three block
assists. Downes played well again as she totaled six kills, seven
digs and three block assists. Long had another standout match for
the Gulls as she finished with 17 digs. Freshman setter Carley Todd
(Centerport, N.Y.) was 20-for-55 on sets and had five
kills of her own.
The Sea Gulls will have several days off before their next
match, as they won the Capital Athletic Conference regular season
championship, and have a first-round bye in the CAC tournament. The
Sea Gulls will square off against the winner of No. 4-seed York
(Pa.) College and No. 5-seed St. Mary's. The semifinal match is set
for Thursday, Nov. 5 at the Maggs Physical Activies Center.
