Smedley has career day in SU's 34-19 victory over Frostburg in 11th annual Regents Cup

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Sophomore super back Randal Smedley (Frederick, Md.) ran for a career-high 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Salisbury University football team to a 34-19 victory over Atlantic Central Football Conference rival Frostburg State University in the 11th annual Regents Cup before 1,505 on Saturday night at Sea Gull Stadium. The contest marked the first time that the Regents Cup was held away from neutral territory and the first time that SU has defeated Frostburg at home since 1995. With the victory, the Sea Gulls clinched second-place in the ACFC.

Salisbury (5-5, 2-1 ACFC) used 390 yards on the ground to post its second highest rushing total of the year as the Sea Gulls have now won six consecutive bouts against the Bobcats. The SU defense complemented the prevalent offensive unit as the Sea Gulls held Frostburg to a mere 224 yards of total offense.

Smedley stole the show for SU as his efforts helped him gather the Mike McGlinchey Most Valuable Player award for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury was aided by the 64 yards rushing and two touchdown performance by senior super back William Midgette (Salisbury, Md.). The Sea Gulls had two other runners post big days in senior slot Valdase Morris (Salisbury, Md.) and junior slot Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.), who ran for 76 and 61 yards, respectively. The receiving corps was led by junior wideout Jimmy DeBernardis (Potomac, Md.), who caught one pass for 14 yards.

Frostburg (1-9, 1-2 ACFC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Zachary Beukers hammered home a field goal on the game's opening drive. SU quickly responded on the ensuing possession with a 10-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Sean Kelly (Fallson, Md.) before the Bobcats posted a touchdown of their own. Smedley used a 17-yard touchdown run to push SU ahead in the final minutes of the first half but Beukers connected on another field goal to bring the Bobcats within one, 13-12, at the half.

Smedley opened the second half with his second touchdown of the game, this time a run from 51 yards out. After trading possessions for the next six minutes, Frostburg would inch closer when Mike Iheakanwa picked up a fumble and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown brought Salisbury's lead to 20-19. It was as close as Frostburg would get the rest of the way as Midgette tallied two touchdown runs of 1 yard and 6 yards in the fourth quarter to even SU's record on the year.

The Salisbury defense had two players collect seven tackles in sophomore linebacker Matt Leon (Hillsborough, N.J.) and senior linebacker Tom Fontaine (Philadelphia, Pa.). Junior linebacker Justin Chura (Lothia, Md.) had five tackles while sophomore linebacker Arinze Obiako (Odenton, Md.), senior defensive tackle Alex Bresner (Marblehead, Mass.), freshman linebacker Matt McMurdo (Chalfton, Pa.), and senior defensive back Antione Cuff (Landover, Md.) each had four. Fontaine, Cuff, and senior defensive back Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.) each had an interception in the contest. The interception was Hudson's eighth of the season which tied Byron Westbrook's single-season program record. Westbrook accomplished the feat in 2004.

Iheakanwa was honored as the Mike McGlinchey Most Valuable Player for Frostburg after his fumble recovery for a touchdown; he also posted six tackles in the contest. Travis Blair had a game-high 15 tackles while Terryl Monroe had 12. The FSU offense was led by Anthony King, who ran for 87 yards on 18 attempts.

The game marked the final game at Sea Gull Stadium for 16 student-athletes: Morris, Cuff, Fontaine, Hudson, Midgette, Bresner, Eric Arndt (Waldick, N.J.), Bobby Sheahin (Brookeville, Md.), D.J. Nelson (Mullica Hills, N.J.), Darryl Jones (Fruitland, Md.), Anthony Arellano (Woodbridge, Va.), Paul Cynewski (Moorestown, N.J.), Keith Polizois (Flanders, N.J.) , Jeremy Harris (Forestville, Md.) , Andrew Geisert (White Plains, Md.) and Jonathan Bannister (Columbia, Md.).
