Sea Gulls grounded by Bison, Jones nets 22 points

WASHINGTON, D.C - Junior guard Devin Jones tallied a team-high 22 points but it was not enough as the Salisbury University men's basketball team fell to Gallaudet University, 80-70, in a Capital Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night.

Salisbury (9-13, 6-7 CAC) was led by the efforts of Jones, who had three assists and three steals. The co-captain was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the game. Sophomore center Ryan Hourihan notched nine points and had a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss. Junior guards Drew Dickson (seven rebounds) Ronald Mann (three steals, three assists) had 10 and eight points, respectively, for the Sea Gulls.

Gallaudet (11-12, 2-12 CAC) led from start-to-finish as the Bison collected their second conference win of the season. Gallaudet took the game's first lead, 2-0, one minute in on a layup by Sekoe White. SU would knot the score up at two a minute later on a lay-up by senior guard Sean Whittaker (seven points). After another Gallaudet bucket, Whittaker would notch two more points to tie to the game at four. That was as close as the Sea Gulls would get the rest of the way as Gallaudet used an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take a nine-point lead, 15-6. The Bison posted a lead as high as 15 at the 3:49 mark but the Sea Gulls stormed back. Junior guard Greg Palmer capped a 7-0 SU run to bring the game within eight points with a just over two minutes left in the half. Salisbury would go into the half down 10 points, 35-25. Palmer registered six points in the frame while Hourihan led all players with six first half rebounds.

The two teams started the first few minutes of the second half scoreless before SU caught fire. The Sea Gulls used six points by Mann to post a 10-2 run to trim Gallaudet's lead to 37-35 with 15 minutes left in the game. The Bison were not phased as they reeled off the games next seven points. SU would cut the Gallaudet lead to seven points, 73-66, on a basket by Jones. The Bison would outscore the Sea Gulls the rest of the way as they evened the season series, 1-1. SU was aided by a 15-for-19 (79 percent) effort from the free-throw line in the second half.

Gallaudet had four players notch double-digit point totals. White (five rebounds) had a game-high 24 points and five assists. John Mowl (13 points) dished out a game-high seven assists. Tony Tatum (four rebounds) came off the bench to score 19 points and Johnny Jackson, Jr. (four assists, four rebounds) had 10 points. The Bison totaled 19 assists in the game.

Salisbury will finish its two-game road trip on Saturday, February 14, at 4 p.m. when the Sea Gulls travel to Stevenson University. The Sea Gulls defeated the Mustangs, 82-76, on January 19.
