SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 21 Salisbury
University softball team dominated Hood College in a Capital
Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull
Field. The Sea Gulls took the doubleheader with an 8-0 win in the
first game followed by a 9-1 victory, both games ended after five
innings.
Salisbury (17-4, 4-0 CAC) had two different players drive in
four runs apiece on the day. Senior Meghan O'Gara
(2-for-5) knocked in three runs on her home run in the second game.
Junior catcher Lauren Brenneman (2-for-4) scored
twice and recorded a double in the second game.
In the first game, SU took control of the game in the bottom of
the first inning as junior first baseman Ali
Ritter batted in three runs on a double to left center
field to give the Gulls a 3-0 lead. Salisbury added a run in the
second and third inning before the Sea Gulls exploded for three in
the bottom of the fourth inning. In the second inning, junior
designated player Brittany Lounge (2-for-2, two
runs) singled home shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (two
runs). Senior second baseman Stacey Malarkey (two
runs) slammed her fifth home run of the season in the third inning.
In the fourth, Salisbury took advantage of three Hood errors to
reach eight runs.
Senior pitcher Stacy Davis (9-2) picked up the
victory in the first game as she allowed two hits and struck out
six Blazers, three of which came in the top of the fifth inning to
end the game.
Hood (3-15, 0-4 CAC) struck first in the second game as the
Blazers got on the scoreboard on a RBI double by starting pitcher
Bridgette Ringley (2-9). The 1-0 lead was short lived as SU batted
around in the bottom of the second to score six runs. The big blow
came off the bat of O'Gara as she belted her ninth home run of the
season to left field.
With bases loaded Ritter, who was walked at the top of the
inning, was once again walked which brought in Waskewicz. The
Blazer pitcher then walked Mills for the sixth and final run of the
inning as Lord flied out to center field.
The Gulls tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third
inning and one in the fifth inning to end the game 9-1 in
Salisbury's favor.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Mills (7-2) started
the second game and allowed one run on three hits, walked one and
struck out five to earn the win. Freshman pitcher Erika
Brittingham came in to relieve Mills in the top of the
fifth inning where she walked one and struck out one. The game
ended when O'Gara doubled home junior Jen Cahall
(2-for-2, two runs) in the bottom half of the inning.
SU will next travel to Washington, D.C., to face Catholic
University of America in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday,
March 31, at 2:30 p.m.
