WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 21 Salisbury
University softball team won twice against Catholic University of
America in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday to extend their
winning streak to 15 games. Salisbury swept the doubleheader
winning the first game 9-2 and the second game 5-3.
Salisbury (19-4) was led by junior shortstop Kelly
Waskewicz who went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored four
runs on the day. Senior pitcher Stacy Davis
(11-2) recorded both wins as she racked up 12 strikeouts and only
gave up two runs in 10 and two-third innings.
In the first game, Salisbury held a 4-1 lead going into the
seventh inning when the Sea Gulls exploded for five runs. The
outburst was led by senior outfielder Meghan
O'Gara (1-for-3, four RBIs) who scored three runners on
her one-out double. Sophomore third baseman Kristin
Lord (1-for-3, one run, one RBI) and junior outfielder
Jen Cahall (2-for-3, one run, one RBI) both
knocked in a run as SU led 9-1.
Davis pitched a complete game to pick up her first win on the
day as she allowed only two runs on eight hits and struck out
eight.
Salisbury jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game in the
first two innings. Senior second baseman Stacey
Malarkey, who had a home run in the first game, drove in
two runs after Waskewicz (two runs) doubled and junior
Brittany Lounge walked. Catholic (7-9) came back
to tie the game at 3-3 in the third inning only to see Salisbury
score one run in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the game.
Salisbury's final runs were scored by Malarkey on a Davis double in
the fifth and Waskewicz scored on a Lounge double in the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Mills started the game
as she surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits and four
walks in three and one-third innings. Davis came in during the
fourth inning to finish the game and pick up her second win on the
day. She did not allow a run or a Cardinal hit as she added four
strikeouts.
Salisbury will next hit the road and face Capital Athletic
Conference foe Stevenson University on Thursday, April 2, at 3 p.m.
at home.
