CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Salisbury University won two
important in-region softball games Sunday afternoon against No. 23
Lynchburg College at a neutral site at Great Bridge High School.
The Sea Gulls (4-2) swept the Hornets in a doubleheader 5-3 and
4-2.
SU received two well pitched games by senior Stacy
Davis in the first game and sophomore Kelsey
Mills in the second game. Both pitchers went the distance
in the wins. Davis (2-1) allowed three runs on four hits, walked
two and struck out two Hornets. Mills (1-1) allowed two runs on
three hits and struck out seven.
The offense was paced by shortstop Kelly
Waskewicz who went 3-for-4 in the first game and delivered
the big hit in the second game as she connected on her second home
run of the season. Waskewicz hit a three-run homer in the four run
third inning for the Sea Gulls.
In the first game, junior catcher Lauren
Brenneman hit solo home run in the third inning to give SU
a quick 1-0 lead. The home run was Brenneman's third of the season.
Second baseman Stacey Malarkey followed with her
own solo home run to put SU up 2-0. The Sea Gulls hung onto a 3-2
lead in the sixth inning before junior first baseman Ali
Ritter came through with a two-run hit to give SU a 5-2
advantage. Junior Brittany Lounge had three hits
in the first game.
The third inning was another key moment for the Sea Gulls in the
second game. Mills led off with a double then senior outfielder
Meaghan O'Gara (2-for-3) followed with a single to
set the table for Waskewicz. The All-American blasted her 36th
career home run to give SU the 3-0 lead. Malarkey added a
RBI-single in the fourth. Brenneman went 1-for-2 in the second game
with a double.
Salisbury turns back around to head south to Virginia on
Wednesday, March 11, for another big in-region doubleheader against
Christopher Newport University. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
