YORK, Pa. - The No. 18 Salisbury
University softball team wrapped up a perfect conference regular
season on Saturday afternoon as the Sea Gulls swept a doubleheader
over Capital Athletic Conference rival York (Pa.) College 3-0 and
7-0 at Spartan Stadium. SU has now reeled off 23 consecutive wins
and will be the No. 1 seed in next week's CAC tournament. The two
victories proved to be the seventh straight doubleheader sweep for
SU. Salisbury now has 10 shutouts on the season.
In game one, Salisbury (27-4, 12-0 CAC) struggled early to put
runs on the board. The Sea Gull bats came alive in the sixth
inning. With one out, senior second baseman Stacey
Malarkey doubled to the gap in right center field and
moved to third on an infield single by junior first baseman
Ali Ritter (2-for-3). Senior starting pitcher
Stacy Davis helped her own cause with a ground out
to the shortstop that sent Malarkey home and moved pinch runner
Taylor Webb over to third. The Sea Gulls would not
stop there as sophomore third baseman Kristin Lord
followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence.
The Spartans (23-9, 9-3 CAC) had their best chance to put runs
on the board in the following frame. Davis would give up a single
and double to begin the seventh inning but would regroup and force
the next three Spartan batters into easy outs. Davis (14-2) was
credited with the victory after she pitched seven innings, struck
out seven and walked two. York starting pitcher Britanny Therres
(11-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (all
earned) on 11 hits.
In the second game, SU was able to score early as the Gulls
scored at least one run in each of the first four innings. In the
top of the first, junior catcher Lauren Brenneman
(2-for-4, two runs) roped a single with two
outs. After Malarkey was drilled by a pitch, Ritter plated
Brenneman with a single down the right field line. Salisbury
followed suit in the second when Lord led off the inning with her
second home run of the day. Meaghan O'Gara, the
reigning CAC Player of the Week, followed up with a double and
would later score on a single up the middle by junior
Brittany Lounge.
In the third inning, SU added another tally when Malarkey scored
on a single by junior Jen Cahall (two hits). The
Sea Gull advantage continued to grow in the fourth when junior
shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (2-for-5) connected on a
solo home run. The York deficit would grow by two more in the sixth
as Lounge led off with a single and scored on a double by
Brenneman. Brenneman came home later that inning when sophomore
starting pitcher Kelsey Mills singled her home.
Mills (six strikeouts) improved to 11-2 as she held a perfect
game into the sixth inning. The sophomore was masterful as she
pitched all seven innings and allowed just one Spartan hit. York
starting pitcher Sam Koehl (12-4) was credited with the loss
after giving up 12 hits in the complete game effort.
Salisbury will receive a bye to begin the CAC Tournament and
will host its second round game against the winner of
Hood College and Wesley College on Thursday, April 16. SU will also
host the double-elimination CAC championship tournament which is
scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 18.
