Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 19 Salisbury
University softball team won a 13th consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference championship on Sunday afternoon as the Sea Gulls beat
second-seed University of Mary Washington, 8-0, in six innings.
This is the 14th overall conference championship for SU since it
joined the conference in 1995.
Salisbury (30-4) started off the contest strong as they scored
two runs in the bottom of the first inning. All-American junior
shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (two runs, two hits,
four RBIs) reached base on a passed ball by University of Mary
Washington catcher Kim Olinger. Junior designated player
Brittany Lounge followed with a sacrifice bunt
that moved up Waskewicz. Senior second baseman Stacey
Malarkey hit her 10th home run of the season over the
right-center field fence to give SU the quick 2-0 lead.
Senior pitcher Stacy Davis (17-2) kept the
Eagles in check and off the scoreboard in the top of the second as
she faced three batters and struck out all three.
In the bottom of the second, senior outfielder Meaghan
O'Gara (2-for-2) doubled to left-center. With one on base,
Waskewicz blasted her ninth home run of the season over the left
field fence as the Sea Gulls led 4-0. That ended the day for UMW
starting pitcher Nicole Foster (3-6). Senior Kirsten Rowell entered
the game and finished out the game for the Eagles. Rowell pitched
12 innings the game before the championship game as the Eagles beat
third-seed York (Pa.) College 2-1 in 12 innings. In four tournament
games Rowell struck out 32 batters.
Davis continued her dominance in the circle as the Eagles were
not able to score any runs throughout the contest off the
right-hander. Davis allowed two hits, walked one and struck out
five.
SU tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fourth off
the bat of O'Gara and ended the game in the sixth inning.
Junior first baseman Ali Ritter started off the
sixth inning as she hit a single into left field and advanced to
second as she took advantage of an Eagle error. Sophomore
Taylor Webb then came in to pinch run for Ritter
and junior Amanda DeMoine came in to pinch hit for
Davis. DeMoine laid down a sacrifice bunt which moved up Webb and
set the stage for junior outfielder Jen Cahall
(one run, one RBI). Cahall doubled to left-center field to score
Webb and give SU the 6-0 lead. With two outs O'Gara kept her
composure at the plate as she was patient and eventually earned the
walk against Rowell. That was the only walk allowed in four
innings. With two runners on base Waskewicz ended the game with a
double to right field which scored Cahall and O'Gara to give SU the
eight-run victory and the conference title.
Salisbury has won its last 26 games and will head south to
Virginia Beach, Va., on Tuesday, April 21, to face Virginia
Wesleyan College in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
