VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 19 Salisbury
University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader
against Virginia Wesleyan College on the road Tuesday as the Sea
Gulls increased their winning streak to 28 games.
Senior pitcher Stacy Davis (19-2) earned the
victories for the maroon and gold as she pitched a one-hit shutout
in the first game where SU (32-4) won 5-0. In the second game,
Davis came in to relieve sophomore starting pitcher Kelsey
Mills in the fourth inning and held the Marlins (25-15)
scoreless and to one hit to close out the 6-1 game.
Davis finished the day with 11 scoreless innings pitched where
she allowed two hits, walked two and struck out nine.
In the first game, Salisbury scored a run in the first inning
and plated two runs in the third and sixth innings. Four Sea Gulls
had two hits against Marlin junior pitcher Brittany Brown (23-8).
Catcher Lauren Brenneman (two RBIs), second
baseman Stacey Malarkey (two RBIs), first baseman
Ali Ritter (one RBI), the 3-4-5 hitters for SU,
drove in all five runs for the maroon and gold. Davis helped her
own cause with two hits which included one of SU's three doubles.
The second game found Salisbury down 1-0 in the second inning as
junior Jackie Jarzynka drove in the Marlins' lone run on the day
against Mills (three strikeouts). Salisbury got on the scoreboard
in the fifth with two runs and then added four insurance runs in
the seventh. Junior catcher Amanda DeMoine had a
pinch-hit home run in the seventh. She slammed her second home run
of the season, a three-run shot, off VWC pitcher Ally Eates (2-6).
Designated player Brittany Lounge had two hits and
two RBIs while Ritter added a RBI in the victory.
Salisbury returns home to host Gettysburg College tomorrow
(Wednesday, April 22) in a non-conference doubleheader that begins
at 3:30 p.m.
