Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 14 Salisbury
University softball team swept Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.)
College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to complete the
regular-season with a 30-game win streak. SU won the first game
14-0 in five innings and followed that with a 7-1 win over the
Shorewomen. This is the ninth straight doubleheader sweep for the
Sea Gulls (34-4) this season.
Salisbury's three seniors Stacy Davis,
Stacey Malarkey and Meaghan
O'Gara were honored before the start of today's game as
the doubleheader marked the final regular-season home game for the
Sea Gulls. Malarkey (3-for-5) hit her team leading 11th home run in
the first game and scored four runs and drove in three runs between
the two games. She was hit by the pitch for the 16th time this
season as she leads the nation in that category. Davis (20-2) the
starting pitcher for SU in the first game helped her cause at the
plate as she went 2-for-3 and recorded two RBIs and connected on
her seventh double of the season. The right-hander won her 20th
game this season as she held the Shorewomen scoreless as she
allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two en route to her
seventh shutout this season. O'Gara, the 2009 Capital Athletic
Conference Player of the Year, collected two hits and scored two
runs in the first game and drove in two runs in the second game.
The Sea Gulls jumped out on Washington pitcher Emily Adams
(11-9) in the first inning as SU scored four runs. Junior shortstop
Kelly Waskewicz (one run, two hits, two RBIs)
doubled to center field to lead off the bottom of the first inning
for SU. Junior designated player Brittany Lounge
(two runs, two RBIs) reached base on a bunt and used smart base
running to advance to third base while Waskewicz came around to
score. Junior catcher Lauren Brenneman (two runs,
three RBIs) singled to left field to plate Lounge. Malarkey stepped
to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to give SU the early
4-0 lead.
The Shorewomen (15-21-1) struggled at the plate, in both games,
as they were only able to collect three hits in the first game and
five in the second game.
The Sea Gulls broke loose in the bottom of the second inning as
they scored nine runs on 10 hits to put the game out-of-reach.
Junior outfielder Jen Cahall (two runs) started
things off with a single to right field followed by an O'Gara
single to left field. Cahall and O'Gara took advantage of a wild
pitch by Adams and each advanced one base. With runners on second
and third base, Lounge singled up the middle to score both runners
as she advanced to second base on the throw. Brenneman blasted hit
her ninth home run of the season over the left field fence to give
the Gulls a commanding 8-0 lead. Davis tacked on a run later in the
inning when she doubled down the left field line to score Malarkey.
Sophomore Kristin Lord added a sacrifice fly to
left field to plate first baseman Ali Ritter.
Cahall came to the plate again in the inning for her second at bat
and hit a single to the outfield to score Davis. Waskewicz capped
off the nine-run inning with a two-run single down the left-field
line.
Salisbury added one final run in the bottom of the third inning.
In the second game, Salisbury scored two runs in the second, one
in the third and four in the sixth inning off Washington starting
pitcher Meaghan Kimme (5-10). SU sophomore starting pitcher
Kelsey Mills (13-2) gave up one run in the top of
the sixth as the Shorewomen scored on a single up the middle. Mills
gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three.
Salisbury did most of its damage in the bottom of the sixth
inning as the Sea Gulls scored four runs. Brenneman started off the
inning with a walk and then scored on a Shorewomen fielding error.
Mills reached on a fielding error by Washington's third baseman and
then reached second on an additional error by the left fielder
which allowed Brenneman to score. Lord then singled to left field
to put runners on first and third base. Cahall followed with a
RBI-single to left. O'Gara reached on a Washington fielding error
as Lord and Cahall scored.
For the month of April the Sea Gulls have only allowed four runs
in 15 games.
Today's doubleheader also marked the return of SU Alum and
softball great Lacey Lister, who is in her first season as coach at
Washington College. Lister pitched for the maroon and gold from
2003-06 where she was a four-time All-American, a three-time CAC
Player of the Year and three-time All-CAC member. She set every
school pitching record and concluded her career ranked in the top
10 of eight different NCAA Division III pitching categories.
Salisbury, who is ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, will now
wait for the official announcement of the 2009 NCAA Division III
Softball Tournament field next weekend to see if the Sea Gulls will
make a 14th appearance in the tournament. SU has already been
selected as the host of the Atlantic Region which will run from May
7-11 at the SU Softball Complex.
