Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team hit the road and returned to the court on
Saturday after a three-week hiatus to face off against Christopher
Newport University, falling to the Captains, 87-62.
The Sea Gulls (5-3, 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference), whose last
game was back on Dec. 12 against Goucher College, got off to a
rocky start as the Captains (10-0) scored the first eight points of
the contest. Undeterred, senior forward Janay
Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) scored the Sea Gulls' first
two points of the game off of an assist from junior
guard Chante'
McKinney (Gaithersburg, Md.). Johnson led the maroon
and gold's scoring in the first half, netting seven points and
pulling down three rebounds. The Captains continued to add on to
their lead, entering halftime with a 26-point advantage.
Additionally, Christopher Newport's defense held senior forward
Kylie Hall (Baltimore, Md.), who leads the
team with a 16.1 points per game average, to just two points in the
half.
The Captains continued their scoring in the second half, led by
Chelsie Schweers, who had a career night as she netted 36 points.
Salisbury's leading scorer on the night was sophomore guard
Glen Charlton (Landover, Md.), who scored 18
points; Johnson finished with 13 points.
Salisbury will remain on the road for its next two games, first
facing off against Washington (Md.) College on Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
and then squaring off against CAC foe Gallaudet University on Jan.
6 at 6 p.m. The Sea Gulls' next home contest will be on Saturday,
Jan. 9, against CAC opponent Marymount (Va.) University. Tip-off is
set for 2 p.m.
