Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury
University volleyball team closed out competition in the
Christopher Newport Invitational on Saturday taking on two of the
best teams in the country, falling in five tough sets to both the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the host Captains.
The Sea Gulls (13-9) fell in their opening match to No. 10
UW-Oshkosh (19-3) 25-13, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8. Sophomore
Kelly
Vieira registered a team-high 13 kills to go with 19
digs in the match and four total blocks. Classmate Chelsea
Glowacki was good for nine kills in the match and
four total blocks while Kristin
Jehle added eight kills and 10 digs.
Senior Melissa
Stansbury had 19 digs while setters Carley
Todd and Lindsey
Saltzman put up 19 and 16 assists, respectively.
The second match of the day, against No. 6 Christopher Newport
(23-1), was a rematch of last season's NCAA tournament regional
championship game in which the Sea Gulls fell in five games.
Saturday the Sea Gulls won the fourth game to send the match to a
fifth, but could not avenge the 2009 loss, taking a 23-25, 25-16,
25-14, 20-25, 15-7 defeat.
Todd added to her impressive tournament with a triple-double
performance of 13 kills, 20 assists, 12 digs and added five block
assists for good measure. For her efforts, the sophomore was named
to the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Jenna Shay
also had 13 kills while Glowacki recorded 10 kills and six total
blocks. Stansbury and freshman Jacki
Kaluzny were able to dig 22 balls while Vieira had 20.
Saltzman tallied 21 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Salisbury will be off until next weekend when it hosts the
Salisbury University Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16 and
17.
