NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University volleyball team closed out competition in the Christopher Newport Invitational on Saturday taking on two of the best teams in the country, falling in five tough sets to both the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the host Captains.

The Sea Gulls (13-9) fell in their opening match to No. 10 UW-Oshkosh (19-3) 25-13, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8. Sophomore Kelly Vieira registered a team-high 13 kills to go with 19 digs in the match and four total blocks. Classmate Chelsea Glowacki was good for nine kills in the match and four total blocks while Kristin Jehle added eight kills and 10 digs.

Senior Melissa Stansbury had 19 digs while setters Carley Todd and Lindsey Saltzman put up 19 and 16 assists, respectively.

The second match of the day, against No. 6 Christopher Newport (23-1), was a rematch of last season's NCAA tournament regional championship game in which the Sea Gulls fell in five games. Saturday the Sea Gulls won the fourth game to send the match to a fifth, but could not avenge the 2009 loss, taking a 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 20-25, 15-7 defeat.

Todd added to her impressive tournament with a triple-double performance of 13 kills, 20 assists, 12 digs and added five block assists for good measure. For her efforts, the sophomore was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Jenna Shay also had 13 kills while Glowacki recorded 10 kills and six total blocks. Stansbury and freshman Jacki Kaluzny were able to dig 22 balls while Vieira had 20. Saltzman tallied 21 assists and 10 digs in the match.

Salisbury will be off until next weekend when it hosts the Salisbury University Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16 and 17.
