FROSTBURG, Md. – The Salisbury University football team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon, earning a 37-6 victory at Frostburg State University, winning the program's eighth Regent's Cup. The teams have played for the cup 12 times; this was the first time the game was played on the Frostburg campus.

The win also gives Salisbury second place in the Atlantic Central Football Conference's last season, posting a 2-1 mark in league play.

The Sea Gull defense was the star of the day, holding the Bobcats to just 158 yards of total offense, including a mere 99 passing yards (Frostburg entered the day averaging nearly 170 passing yards per game). Salisbury saw three players pick off passes on the day, the most impressive being a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown by freshman Andre Carter late in the second quarter.

The pick ended a drive in which the Bobcats were threatening to pull within one score, trailing 16-0 at the time. But Carter, who has been named the ACFC Rookie of the Week twice this season, turned the tides, allowing the Gulls to take a 23-0 lead into halftime. Salisbury's other two interceptions, which also came in the first half, were picked off by junior defensive back Paul Moore and senior lineman Dion Bowen.

Salisbury (7-2, 2-1 ACFC) got a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half as well, as sophomore superback Joe Benedetti rumbled for a 34-yard score to get things started and sophomore slot Brandon Norwood, ran for a 14-yard score in the second quarter.

The Sea Gulls also got a 27-yard field goal from freshman Andy Estrain, his first career field goal.

Frostburg (2-8, 1-2 ACFC) was able tally the first score of the third quarter, putting together a seven-play 36-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard Anthony King touchdown plunge. The two-point conversion failed, but the score was cut to 23-6.

The game would stand that way until Norwood came up with a pair of big runs to put the game on ice. The sophomore scampered 32 yards to pay dirt for his second score of the day with 2:37 remaining. After Salisbury recovered a short kickoff, Norwood took the next play 35 yards for a score just 18 seconds after his previous one.

Norwood finished with 77 yards on seven carries and the three scores. All three numbers were career highs and for his efforts, Norwood was named the Mike McGlinchey MVP for the Sea Gulls.

Defensive back Terryl Monroe, was named the MVP for the Bobcats, posting 11 tackles, seven solo.

Salisbury got several strong defensive performances, including senior Justin Chura, who finished with a team-high nine tackles (six solo), one for a loss. Sophomore Chris Everett had eight tackles.

Senior slot Bryan Woolson ran for 150 yards on 14 carries while superback Nick Coates finished with 83 yards.

Salisbury will now await the announcement of the bracket for NCAA Division III Football Tournament on Sunday afternoon to see if they will get to fight for national championship. The bracket will be release on ESPNews between 3 and 3:30 p.m.
