VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University
softball team got its 2010 season started Wednesday afternoon at
Virginia Wesleyan College, but was only able to get a game and a
half in before the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness.
The Sea Gulls dropped their first game of the season, 8-2, as
the Marlins found their way on base throughout the game. Junior
Kelsey
Mills (Frederick, Md.) took the loss, allowing three
hits and walking five in two innings of work. Junior Kelly Leary
(Severn, Md.) worked in relief, allowing just two hits
while walking four batters. Through Virginia Wesleyan's nine
offensive innings on the day, six Marlins were hit by pitches,
while the Sea Gulls plunked just 13 batters throughout the entire
2009 season.
"I thought Virginia Wesleyan did a great job preparing for us,"
Salisbury coach Margie Knight
said, "and we have a lot of things to work on before we face
Christopher Newport this Saturday."
Salisbury got 2-for-4 performances at the plate from seniors
Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.), Brittany Lounge
(Pasadena, Md.) and Ali Ritter (Belvidere,
N.J.) and junior Kristin Lord (Denton,
Md.). Waskewicz also knocked in a run in the loss.
Salisbury (0-1) fell behind early in the second game as the
Marlins' first three batters in the first inning reached base and
eventually scored for a 3-0 lead. Salisbury claimed the 5-3 lead in
the top of the third, scoring five runs with two outs. The Sea
Gulls took advantage of a Virginia Wesleyan mistake as a blooper
off the bat of Lord fell in behind second base, scoring three runs.
Lord later scored on a Casey Zaino (Pine Hill,
N.J.) base knock.
Sophomore pitcher Erika Brittingham (Georgetown,
Del.) worked the first three innings, settling in after
the first inning which included a pair of hit batters.
The completion of the suspended game has not been scheduled as
of yet, but will likely take place when Virginia Wesleyan (3-0)
travels to Salisbury for the Sea Gull Invitational on March 12 and
13.
Salisbury is next scheduled to get on the field on Saturday,
Feb. 27, when Christopher Newport University is slated to be at the
SU Softball Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
