SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University
softball coach Margie Knight earned her 500th career win on
Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Wesley College.
She was honored prior to the start of Saturday's doubleheader
against Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson University, as
she became just the 25th coach in Division III history to
reach the plateau.
The team celebrated Knight's milestone by collecting two
more wins for her on Saturday, sweeping the Mustangs (9-6, 1-4
CAC) with scores of 8-0 and 3-0. The Sea Gulls are now 17-2
overall, 4-0 in the CAC, and boast a 15-game winning streak.
The maroon and gold were able to take the lead early as
senior Ali Ritter (Belvidere, N.J.) singled up
the middle to bring in a run with two outs. Salisbury would
continue to tack on three more runs in the third and fourth inning.
Salisbury brought in four additional runs in the bottom of the
fifth inning to end the game early. With bases loaded and two outs
senior shortstop Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled to center
field to collect three RBI and bring the score to 7-0. Senior
Brittany Lounge (Pasadena, Md.) then
proceeded to bring Waskewicz home with a double to left field to
end the game in five innings of play.
Junior pitcher Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.) earned her ninth win as she worked
all five innings, allowing only two hits as she walked two and
struck out six batters.
In the second game the Gulls were late to get on the board as
the Mustang pitching kept the score tied 0-0 until the fifth
inning.
In the fifth inning, Salisbury took advantage of two Mustang errors
as junior Kristin Lord (Denton, Md.) scored off
the bat of Waskewicz. Waskewicz then crossed the plate as she took
advantage of a Stevenson throwing error as the Mustangs tried
unsuccessfully to pick off Lounge as she stole second base.
The Sea Gulls would further extend their lead as they scored one
additional run in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Erika
Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.) earned the win as she
allowed just one hit late in the seventh inning, walked two and
struck out two batters.
Salisbury will continue its play in the CAC conference as it
travels to Hood College on Sunday, March 28th to face the Blazers
in a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
