FREDERICK, Md. – The
No. 17 Salisbury University softball team pounded Hood College in
the first game of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, taking a
10-0 win in five innings, then needed some late scoring to earn the
sweep with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the
opener, the Sea Gulls scored a pair of runs in the second inning on
a two-run double by Casey Zaino
(Pine Hill, N.J.). The two runs would be enough, but
the Salisbury bats were not done.
Senior
Kelly Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.)
sent a solo home run out to center field in the fourth inning to
stretch the lead to 3-0 and came up with her second blast of the
game, this time a two-run shot, as part of a seven-run fifth
inning. Her two home runs give Waskewicz 48 home runs in her
career, moving her into a tie for fourth place on the NCAA career
list.
Freshman
Michelle Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.)
also came up with a two-run home run in the fifth for the Sea
Gulls. It was her first collegiate home run. Gravdahl finished the
game 3-for-4 while senior Jen Cahall
(Elkton, Md.), Waskewicz and Zaino each had two hits
in the game.
The
offense allowed pitcher Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.) to collect her 10th win of the
season. The junior scattered four Hood hits and walked one batter
while striking out nine.
In the
second game, the teams traded runs early. Salisbury took a 1-0 lead
in the first on an RBI double by Lauren
Brenneman (York, Pa.). But the Blazers (7-9, 2-2 CAC)
would scratch together a pair of runs in the home half to take a
2-1 lead. Salisbury added another run in the top of the second to
tie the game, and that is where it would stand until the seventh
inning.
Salisbury
(19-2, 6-0 CAC) got a break and ran with it in the final inning.
After freshman Sarah Alpaugh (Eldersburg, Md.) walked to open
the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, she was able
to score on a play that contained a pair of Hood errors. Salisbury
scored two runs in the inning, both unearned, to make a winner of
sophomore Erika
Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.), who worked six shutout
innings in relief, allowing just one hit while walking two and
striking out four.
Salisbury
will be back in action on Tuesday, when it hosts Catholic
University of America in a doubleheader at the SU Softball Field.
The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
