SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 21 Salisbury
University softball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of
the 2010 season Friday afternoon, taking down Albright College 8-0
and 17-2, both games finishing after five innings.
The Sea Gulls (3-2) jumped on the Lions early in both games. In
the opener, Salisbury put together four runs in the first inning,
needing just one hit in the frame. Senior Jen Cahall (Elkton,
Md.) drove home the first run of the game on a ground
ball to the shortstop as senior Brittany
Lounge (Pasadena, Md.) scampered home. Freshman Michelle
Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.) drove two runs in with a
sharp grounder up the middle before junior Kristin Lord
(Denton, Md.) bunted home Cahall for a 4-0 lead.
The Sea Gulls never looked back, scoring a run in the second and
two more in the third before finishing off the game with a single
run in the home half of the fifth.
Junior pitcher Kelly Leary
(Severn, Md.) collected her second win of the season,
working three innings, striking out eight Albright batters and
allowing just one hit.
Salisbury opened up the second game with another big inning. The
Sea Gulls scored just two runs, but they both came on solo home
runs off the bats of senior Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brenneman. The
blasts, both to left-center field, were Waskewicz's first of the
year and Brenneman's second.
Waskewicz was a force at the plate all day, finishing the
doubleheader 6-for-8.
The Lions (0-2) were able to tie the game in the top of the
third inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs off Salisbury
starting pitcher Erika
Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.). But the tied game
would not last long as the Sea Gull offense exploded for 15 runs in
the bottom of the third, sending 19 batters to the plate in the
inning. Salisbury got the two biggest hits of the inning off the
bat of senior Rachel
Hastings (Westborough, Mass.) who blasted her first
homer of the year, a grand slam, and a three-run triple later in
the inning.
Brittingham collected the win, her first of the season. She
worked three innings, allowing three hits while striking out four
batters.
Salisbury will continue at home this weekend, hosting a
tournament including Albright, Frostburg State University and Rowan
University. The Sea Gulls will play Rowan at 1 p.m. on Saturday and
Frostburg State at 3 p.m.
