SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 21 Salisbury
University softball closed out a six-win weekend Sunday afternoon,
topping Frostburg State University and No. 24 Rowan University at
the SU Softball Field.
The Sea Gulls (7-2) took down Frostburg in their first game of
the day, 8-0 in six innings, behind the outstanding pitching
performances of juniors Kelly Leary (Severn,
Md.) and Kelsey Mills (Frederick,
Md.).
Leary got the start and allowed a lead-off base hit in the top
of the first inning. It was the only base runner the Bobcats (1-3)
would have throughout the game. Leary worked a career-high 4 1/3
innings, striking out one, while Mills came on in relief and sat
down all five batters she faced, striking out one.
Salisbury's offense put runners on base in every inning, but did
not get on the scoreboard until the third, plating two runs,
including one on the first home run of the year by senior
Ali Ritter
(Belvidere, N.J.), a shot down the right field line.
The Sea Gulls put the game away with four runs in the bottom of
the fourth inning, the big blow being a two-run double by Ritter.
The three runs driven in by Ritter are her most this season.
Freshman Michelle
Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.) drove home the
game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, the third straight
game that she has driven in the final run to end the game early.
In the 8-3 win against Rowan, Salisbury continued its strong
play in all aspects of the game. The Sea Gulls got another strong
pitching performance, this time from sophomore Erika Brittingham
(Georgetown, Del.) and the offense put together a
season-best 14 hits.
Brittgham allowed one Rowan (2-2) run on two hits while striking
out five to collect her third win of the season.
Seniors Lauren Brenneman (York,
Pa.) and Brittany Lounge
(Pasadena, Md.) led the offensive onslaught with
three-hit performances at the plate. Lounge scored three runs,
matching her career high, while Brenneman finished with a pair of
doubles, the fourth time in her career with two doubles in a game.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action Friday, March 12 as they
open up play in the Sea Gull Invitational. The tournament will be
played Friday and Saturday at the Henry Parker Complex. Salisbury
will take on Shenandoah University and Wilkes University on Friday.
