– The No. 12 Salisbury University softball team closed out
yet another undefeated run through the Capital Athletic Conference
regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Mary
Washington on Saturday afternoon with wins of 3-0 and 3-2.
Salisbury coach Margie
Knight has now led the Gulls to seven unblemished CAC
regular seasons in her 14 years in the dugout.
The first
game on Saturday remained scoreless through the first three innings
before the Sea Gulls put up a trio of runs with one in the fourth
inning and two more in the sixth. Third baseman Kristin
Lord (Denton, Md.) drove home Salisbury's first
run with a sacrifice bunt, bringing home junior Taylor Webb
(Federalsburg, Md.), who pinch ran for senior
Ali Ritter (Belvidere, N.J.). Ritter reached
on a double, and went 2-for-3 in the game.
Freshman
Michelle Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.)
drove in Salisbury's two runs in the sixth with a single,
plating senior Jen Cahall
(Elkton, Md.) and Ritter.
Any
offense was going to be enough for Salisbury starting pitcher
Kelly Leary (Severn, Md.), who
scattered just four hits and struck out nine batters over the seven
innings to improve to 12-0 on the season.
Salisbury
(25-2, 12-0 CAC) opened up a 3-0 lead in the second game as well,
scoring once in the second inning and two more in the fourth on a
two-run single off the bat of senior Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.). But things got a
little closer in the late innings.
Starting
pitcher Erika
Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.) made the three-run lead
stand up through the first six innings, allowing four hits and
striking out two batters through the first six frames. In the
seventh, Brittingham allowed a pair of hits and was hurt by an
error before being relieved by Leary. The Eagles (8-24-1, 6-6 CAC)
were able to cut the lead to 3-2, but Leary got a groundball to
third base where Lord scooped up the ball and fired home to retire
the potential tying run at the plate. A strikeout and another
groundball out and Leary had finished the game, recording her
second save of the year as Brittingham earned the win to improve to
10-0.
The Sea
Gulls will open up play as the top seed in the CAC tournament on
Tuesday, April 13 as they host Wesley College, the sixth seed. The
Wolverines clinched the sixth seed on Saturday with a doubleheader
sweep of Gallaudet University. Salisbury will host a second-round
game on Thursday, April 15, both games will begin at 4
p.m.
