SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 12 Salisbury
University softball team took down Wesley College, 11-0, to
earn its first win of the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference
tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Sea Gulls, the top seed in the
tournament, came up with eight hits and pitcher Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.) tossed a gem for her sixth
complete-game shutout of the year.
After a scoreless first inning, the Sea Gulls (26-2) got
things rolling with four runs in the second. A bases-loaded double
by senior Rachel
Hastings (Westborough, Mass.) brought home the
first two runs of the game and flood gates were opened. Seniors
Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brittany
Lounge (Pasadena, Md.) each drove in a run in the
inning, Lounge's coming on her third career triple.
The Sea Gulls put up five more runs in the third, as they put
together three hits and took advantage of a pair of errors by
Wesley (6-29).
Senior Lauren
Brenneman (York, Pa.) began Salisbury's
last scoring inning with a blast the opposite way. Her
solo home run to right-center field pushed Salisbury's advantage to
10-runs.
Leary gave the Wolverines, the tournament's sixth
seed, few chances to score as only one player reached scoring
position. Leary allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out
seven.
Salisbury will host a second-round CAC tournament game against
on Thursday afternoon. The Sea Gulls will take on the loser of the
first-round game between the University of Mary Washington and
Hood College. That game was not played on Tuesday due to the rain;
it will be played on Wednesday afternoon. Tuesday's win guarantees
the Sea Gulls the chance to host the weekend action of the
tournament.
