SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 12 Salisbury
University baseball team battled back in its Capital Athletic
Conference tournament second round game against the Wesley
Wolverines on Thursday afternoon. The Sea Gulls tied the game
in the eighth inning, but a three-run top of the ninth for Wesley
allowed the Wolverines to leave with a 7-5 win.
The Wolverines got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in
their first at-bat as they strung together three straight one-out
hits including a two-run double off Salisbury starting pitcher
Kyle
Judson (Gaithersburg, Md.).
Wesley got another two runs in the third to double its
lead, but the Sea Gull pitching staff was able to limit the
Wolverine offense through the next five innings. Judson settled in
and allowed four base runners over the next 3 1/3 innings of work,
on one hit, before being relieved by junior Mark
Peterson (Reisterstown, Md.). The Wolverines were
stymied by Peterson in the seventh and eighth innings allowing the
Sea Gulls to string some runs together and tie the game.
A sacrifice fly by junior Brad Baylis
(Pocomoke, Md.) in the fifth brought home Salisbury's first run and
Baylis gave the Gulls their second tally with a solo home run in
the bottom of the seventh, his third long ball of the year.
In the seventh inning, the Sea Gulls got patient at the plate,
using just one hit but three hit batters and one walk, to plate two
runs, tying the game at 4-4. The tying run came home when junior
Andrew
Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.) was plunked with the
bases loaded, forcing home senior Chad Wolfe
(Thurmont, Md.).
But the Sea Gulls could not take the lead, and the Wolverines
were able to bring home three runs on four hits in the ninth
against Peterson and Wolfe. Salisbury got one run back in the home
half of the ninth, but could get no more.
As the highest remaining seed, the Sea Gulls will host the
championship weekend of the CAC tournament on Saturday and Sunday,
April 17 and 18. Salisbury will hit the field on Saturday morning
against Stevenson University. Check back at www.suseagulls.com throughout the weekend for updated
match-ups and schedules.
