SALISBURY, Md. – The No.
10 Salisbury University softball team defeated York (Pa.) College
on Saturday afternoon, 5-0, to remain undefeated in the Capital
Athletic Conference tournament. With the win the Sea Gulls advance
to the championship game on Sunday, April 18.
The Sea Gulls (28-2) struck first as they put one run on the
board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Ali Ritter
(Belvidere, N.J.) doubled through the right side to bring home
fellow senior Brittany
Lounge (Pasadena, Md.).
The one run would be all that was needed as Salisbury played
tough defense and had smart pitching on the mound by junior
Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.). Leary earned her 15th
win as she allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out
eight Spartan batters.
Salisbury was able to prevent the Spartans (32-7) from
their best scoring opportunity in the top of fifth inning when York
had runners on the corners. The Gulls came up big, catching Hannah
Hugel stealing second base and subsequently fielding a routine
pop up to close out the inning.
The Gulls put an additional four runs on the board in the fourth
and fifth innings to secure the win and move on to Sunday's game,
against the winner of Saturday's final game between Stevenson
University and York; the Mustangs (18-13) defeated Mary
Washington (9-26-1) in a narrow 5-4 decision on Saturday afternoon
to eliminate the Eagles. The Sea Gulls, who have dominated CAC
play year after year, look to win their 14th consecutive (15th
overall) title. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
