SALISBURY, Md.
– The No. 9 Salisbury University softball team
swept Gettysburg College on Tuesday afternoon, taking a 8-0 victory
in six innings of play followed by a 5-1 victory in the second
game.
In the
first contest the game would remain tied at zero until the Sea Gull
(31-2) bats came alive in the fourth inning. Senior Lauren Brenneman (York, Pa.) would single
through the left side, followed by a double from
senior Jen Cahall (Elkton, Md.). With
runners on second and third freshman Michelle Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md.)
smacked a ball deep into center field, bringing the runners home
and registering her 13th double of the
season.
The
Bullets' (17-14-1) best opportunity to score was in the top of the
fourth as they had bases loaded with just one out. Catrina
DelGais hit a laser to third baseman Kristin
Lord (Denton, Md.) who fielded the ball cleanly,
making it capable for Brenneman to get the out at home and send the
ball to first base to Ali
Ritter (Belvidere, N.J.) to record the double
play.
Salisbury
added an extra run in the bottom of the fifth and then ran away
with the game in the bottom of the sixth as five additional runs
were brought home. Senior Kelly
Waskewicz (Virginia Beach, Va.) ended the game as
she sent her 50th career home run over the
left field fence to bring three runs in, bumping the tally to
eight. Waskewicz is now tied for second place on the Division III
career list with Laura Fencik from Arcadia University (2004-2007).
The all-time leader is Mandy Carnes from Muskingum College
(2000-2003), who hit 59 home runs in her career.
Junior
pitcher Kelly
Leary (Severn, Md.) was solid on the mound as she
allowed four hits for no runs, did not walk a single batter and
struck out four.
The second
game was more of the same as the Gulls took the early lead in the
top of the first inning off of the bat of Ritter. Salisbury would
add four more runs onto the board and Gettysburg would tack one run
on in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Erika Brittingham (Georgetown, Del.)
captured her eleventh win of the season as she gave up one run off
of three hits, walked three and struck out eight.
The Sea
Gulls will return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 28, as they
conclude regular season play against Catholic University in a
doubleheader match-up scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
